UK Weapons and Firearms Law updated January 2018

What UK Weapons Can You Legally Own?

Many UK citizens think that ALL firearms are illegal, and therefore unavailable to the UK public - this is not true.
You have the perfect right to own many types of firearms, but you must be able to have a good reason to do so.

For full, in depth details, check out the UK Home Office Guidelines for firearms.
This is a detailed 270 page document outlining exactly the do's and don'ts of firearm ownership.

Remember this short article is about what weapons you can legally own, it does NOT cover self defence. A lot of people get firearm ownership and self defence mixed up.
You must have genuine reasons for owning a firearm: gun club member, clay pigeon shooting, pest and vermin control etc, not self defence.

However, the range of legal firearms that you can own and use may surprise you.

Below Is A General Guide:
Firearms You Can Legally Own In The UK

UK Legal Firearms

UK Legal Firearms: Top to bottom

  • Civilian Hunting Rifle
  • Semi-Auto Shotgun
  • AR15
  • AKM
  • Anti-Material/Sniper Rifle
  • Long Barrelled Revolver (LBR)

As well as the above firearms, you can own a shotgun -
*in general*, shotguns under 3 capacity (2+1) Section 2 only require a Shotgun Cert (SGC).

The list List is by no means exhaustive, there are hundreds of flavours of firearms available in UK.

uk firearms law certificate

All these above weapons will require a Firearms Certificate, but, once you have been fully vetted by the police, and have fully satisfied all the legal requirements they are all perfectly legal for a UK citizen to own.

The information here is true as of article date, and there are no current legislation changes to the UK firearms laws in the pipeline.

There isn’t any mate, under NO circumstances can a firearm be used for defence in the UK only elite police firearms units have the ability to shoot on sight in the UK

      Give a read through

The most recent case was that of Andy and Tracey Ferrie. They were in bed when two burglars entered their home. Mr Ferrie fired his (legally-held) shotgun at the men. The couple were arrested but then released without charge.

The judge at the intruders’ trial said: “If you burgle a house in the country where the householder owns a legally held shotgun, that is the chance you take. You cannot come to court and ask for a lighter sentence because of it.”

There’s substantially more to it than that. For example, you cannot lie in wait for an intruder (see the Tony Martin case), nor can you set traps. Also you must not discharge at a fleeing intruder or one who is attempting to leave or has stated his (genuine) intention to leave.
Any of the above will result in criminal charges, even for a registered keeper.
Note that keeping a firearm under the bed or similar, “just in case” will be treated similarly to lying in wait. Firearms should be stored according to regulations at all times.
A crude but helpful way of thinking is that if you were required to, could you prove to the satisfaction of judge and jury, that a) you had not lain in wait, and b) you retrieved your firearm from secure storage in response to a perceived threat to your life or safety and that of those in the house from an intruder inside the house, and c) wielding the firearm was intended to deter the intruder – that firing your firearm was from start to finish the option of last resort, to be relied upon only when in immediate danger of imminent violence or to protect another from same. It should go without saying that aiming to injure/scare off instead of aiming to kill would help your case also, but to be sure I’ve included it anyway.
Please bear in mind it is your own responsibility to understand and avoid by current legislation. While learned, I do not practice law so my reply is offered as general guidance only, to cover some omissions I noticed. My current knowledge may or may not be 100 percent up to date. Seek professional legal advice at all times.

If you adopt that approach you will hopefully never have to squeeze the trigger and if you do, you’ll have done so only when no other option was available, and we’re still diligent enough to minimise injury.

Im 15 and would love to be able to go shooting at a club with a vintage rifle. Am I correct in my understanding that I would need to be 18 to own a bolt action rifle (11mm 1886 Austrian mannlicher) as it holds multiple rounds and has a rifled barrel as I would need an FAC?

Here in Aus, thanks to the Shooters and Fishers party. We can defend ourselves and family in our home or place of work. We are allowed to use Deadly Force if that is to be used against us.

you can tool up with a semi-auto .22 Ar15 can even have a .22 magnum though there’s no real point for that.
you can have all manner of straight pull i.e, not self-loading ar15s, ak, fals etc you just have to join a gun club and get a license.
you can have a .50 cal bolt action BMG rifle it’s not an anti-material rifle as you cannot have anything other than solid lead bullets you need to be rich and there are less than half a dozen MoD ranges where you can shoot one.
Northern Ireland allows carry for self-defense but the government will issue you one of they consider your under threat ex-police udr or a politician random people aren’t likely to be targeted for assassination violent criminals who aren’t linked to the paramilitaries life expectancy is going to be short.
long barreled revolvers and modern cap and ball revolvers fall into its legal but the home office hate you.

I would suggest that your chance of the police allowing you to own automatic shot guns, or military style weapons is zero. Especially if you want them for self defence. I’m glad it i difficult to get weapons in the UK. The people who go on shooting sprees in the US are nutters, and they would find it hard to get guns in the UK. Most UK criminals don’t carry guns

What on earth are you on about?!
It says nothing about automatic shotguns, which albeit exist are banned in the UK just like automatic rifles. Nor can you own a firearm for self defense in the UK.
Any firearm can be military “style” thats just aesthetics and does not make it more dangerous.
The nutters you mention weren’t always nutters and so could also get a firearm in the UK. Although the US certainly doesn’t vet potential owners well enough.
Finally its well known more and more UK criminals are carrying illegal firearms and/or weapons. Especially linked to the drugs trade.

It’s actuallythe case that gun laws hold less correlation to crime than you think. You can get guns illegally, which if you are going to commit a crime it’s the only logical thing to do. Legal firearms are almost never used in crimes, and when they are it often is not owned by the assailant.

simple answer, in uk, honest citizens without FAC dont have guns, criminals dont worry about paperwork and happily have ilegal pistols, rifles, sub machine guns, shotguns, knives, swords, kitchen knives, bottles of acid. result, crims dont worry and public should. and i remember Dunblain, the one madman, the thousands of responsible gun owners and the media fed and whipped up knee jerk qovt reaction that removed not a single ilegal weapon.

    Hi all

I have a bit of a situation, I’m female, 24 years old and I would like to purchase a shotgun as I quite enjoy target shooting (I used to do it with my father.) I’m not a member of a gun club as I’m at university and funds are tight, but I have enough money to buy the gun and everything else. My landlord at home won’t allow me to make the alterations to his house to meet the legal shotgun storage requirements. Is there a suitable police approved mobile storage solution? Any advice would be appreciated as I don’t want to fall foul of the law. The obvious solution would likely to be to just get an air rifle, so I could take it with me, but I want a shotty

Install a Brattonsound Sentinel Gun Cabinet, the best way is to use Chemfix styrene free with 10mm stud and bolts.
This will only require cutting stud (Removing cabinet off stud first) when cabinet requires removal to a new location.

You need to join a club really, you’ll get better access for shooting and supplies and more support. If you can afford a shotgun you can afford the £50-80 club membership a year.
Also a club may have someone who can hold guns on your behalf.

  1. What a shame, the subject started on the right path on what we can own and why. A massive turn, and people not from the UK seemed to have started a riot. Delete the page, or edit it as people will switch off. Shame

    1. Hi Mr Normal,
People come to this site for information, and hopefully find what they are looking for.
Deleting the page will solve nothing.
Editing the page would not work as it is stating the facts of firearm ownership in the UK.
Also, readers comments are rarely censored, if they were, I’d be acting just like the governments do……

one fears those whom have a chip on their shoulder, and those who are protected by the system, it appears that the sensible person whom is purchasing items to defend themselves and their families, and friends will be criminalised if they use illegal ways to obtain weapons, perhaps we should be looking for places where we ourselves can be trained and become members of a gun club where we will not break the laws, learn to meet all the standards for a gun licence, and in effect be fully trained in the use and techniques of gun ownership, as for other types of defence weapons one does not need a fancy knife, a bic pen would suffice, or pencil if you got close enough, then you would disarm the perp and hold for the old bill being ready if feel your life is threatened, always follow the rules if you do you will never have anything to fear but alas the loons are still out there with a drug enticed haze just after the wallet filled with plastic you can barter for your wallet if it has pics in it, the best way is not to carry your loved ones pics in your wallet, if you notify the bank and police your house insurance will cover the cost so never put your life on the line always be polite to the old bill the paperwork is killing their jobs and you never know one day they may be there for you. Just be careful use common sense perhaps someone can guide us to registered gun clubs?

Hi, I am planning to move to Lincolnshire having lived there 20 years ago. Yes I know a pit of a place and when I had my pub burglary was a weekly event – locals most probably but what can you do when nobody wants to speak up. Reason is am sick and tired of having 576 busses passing my house weekly, and the noise of it all. This time will have a couple of dogs, am beginning my 70’s and am looking forward to the change. What is available to me regarding firearms, would expect to train in that area, but as I would want to live in a remote farmhouse and on my own – it would be good to know – what if !

    1. Hi Lucia,
I have a few articles on that subject here:

Hi Lucia, basically in the UK it is your right to own a shotgun and its up to the police to show there is good reason for you not to own a shotgun, such as mental health problems. It is not your right to own a firearm and its up to you to show there is good reason for owning a FA. So you would need to be a member of a firearms club or be a land owner or have permission from a landowner to shoot on their land. If you decide to go down any route DO NOT MENTION SELF DEFENSE.

            • Frank Dior on June 9, 2018 at 11:05 am

The crime is getting worse in the UK. Everyday I hear about the situation over there and it’s not good. “Minor” crimes are not being enforced and the criminals are becoming more bold. They know that the police won’t go after them for a lot of the crimes they commit. You Brits do not have the ability to defend yourselves. What’s allowed is very restrictive and the law is vague in regards on how much force can be applied. It leaves too much wiggle room for the authorities to maneuver against people if they do end up using force. Like how they treated that pensioner who killed a intruder in his home. They only let him off because of massive public backlash. That won’t always be the case.
In America people are allowed to defend themselves with practically anything. Knives, guns, pepper spray, batons. Not so in the UK.
America is far from being a “shit hole”. It has some bad parts of the country, but for the most part it’s pretty damn good. America has far more land, environments and opportunities to live and take advantage of. Americans have a higher standard of living than their British counterparts. Most British would love to move to America if they could. They would enjoy a better quality of life and more freedom. I have absolutely no desire to move to Britain. America is a far better place.
Americans have a love affair with guns, because guns, made America. When the British, (YOU PEOPLE) tried to take away our guns and ammo back in the 1700s, we decided it was a good time to part ways with the British rule. We did pretty good at making our own way in this world. Better than you folks. Guns give the everday American the ability to fight for their country, their freedoms and survival if ever called upon. It gives the Constitution its teeth, Liberty’s teeth. You British wouldn’t understand and only have angry, salty, bitter attitudes toward Americans. It’s wearing really thin over here on this side of the pond.
            Really thin.

            • Jessica Talbot on January 22, 2019 at 10:53 pm

Frank Dior, for the most part of what you are saying I am inclined to agree with. I’m British, I love my country but hate the government. They are a bunch of whiny, spineless, lying spunkbuckets. But I have to say that the conversation has swayed away slightly from just being about guns and gun licensing etc, and the differences that you two are
‘ discussing ‘. And has wondered into the area of ‘my country is better than your country’. I very much wish that we had the same situation over here as you yanks have got in your own country as regards to your ‘Second Amendment’. If only we had the right to bare arms here. Because yes, you are absolutely right in that we are no longer allowed to defend our own homes and family. The law is more bothered about the perpetrator having their feelings hurt than the impact the bastard has upon the household they are trying to rob, murder, assault and so on. This country has lost its way in many respects, but in others is leading the way. We can all argue til were blue in the face about what’s best. And you need to remember that you lot over the pond were populated by us Brits, and when you gained independence from GB it was only by sheer numbers that you won. We are still the best armed forces in the world, and a special forces are the world’s elite. You yanks fight and scramble for the opportunity to train with our boys. But back to the main topic of this conversation, we have ruined ourselves by taking away the right to defend oneself. In that you are sadly 100% correct. I have to say though that I don’t know where you have gotten the idea that we Brits don’t like you yanks, I’d love to know? Because almost everyone I can think of wishes that we had the balls that we used to have and started going back to actually punishing the law breakers, bring back capital punishment etc. I know I’m starting to ramble slightly but I hope you get the gist of what it is that I’m saying

            People kill people
Guns are a tool and leisure/hobby equipment.

Dicks with no brains buy a gun with no legitimate use,ie hunting or display.

      1. The UK has 65.64 million citizens.
The US has 325.7 million citizens.
So with over 260 million more people in the US, the percentage of criminal activity will naturally be much higher.
The number of mentally ill will be higher, too.

Unfortunately, the media has made the US look like a cesspool of crime. It is not.
Most people live in friendly communities much like the towns in your beautiful country
and are good citizens living honest lives. Just like in the UK.

I’ve spent a lot of time in your country and whenever I watch the news there, I realize how similar we are.

How is that the criminal now has more rights than the victim? In this aspect, I really do wish we were like America. We no longer have the right to defend our own homes and family. They break into our home, rob, rape and destroy lives. So we fight back and end up with a 10 year stretch, and the bastard that took it upon themselves to illegally enter our home and do as they wish end up with a caution, community service, a suspended sentence or ‘at worst’ a couple of weeks in jail

I’m not worried about gun laws, what about blade laws. I’ve been a collector since the age of 9, I’m now 48. At the end of last year some of my knives got stopped at customs. The next thing I know there’s 2 officers knocking at the door insisting to see my collection. They took photos of my blades and took video footage of me. Everything is OK now, but I was made to feel like I was some kind of terrorist, being filmed and told I couldn’t import any kind of bladed items again. Dose my head in. If kids were taught to use and respect knives from an early age there’d be less knife crime. But instead they’re told not to touch them, they’re dangerous, they’re bad. No wonder kids mess with blades, they’ve been forbidden. I remember knife crimes though out my life. It hasn’t gotten any worse, it’s all this social media crap. If you teach kids how to use and behave with knives the situation would change. Parents should help them learn, instead of letting them do what they want. It’s the parents fault, they’d sooner sit and watch the TV or play bloody gambling games on line.

    1. I must agree with you there Andrew.
In all my years, I feel violence, including knife violence has not got any worse.
Remember the old style gangs and gangsters that used to terrorise the pubs, clubs and streets…
Remember the full on wars at the football terraces each Saturday, with stabbings and full on comatose kickings…
Every town had its hard nuts who went out just looking for a punch up.
Nowadays if someone so much as looks at you a bit funny its considered an act of violence, and you’ve violated and offended..!!!!
As for the police, well there so brainwashed they think a hair clip is an offensive weapon. The old school copper who actually has common sense is very far and few between these days.
Unfortunately we have become a brainwashed society of namby pamby mommies boys. Grown men sitting around playing video games pretending to be Rambo who cry if someone so much as points at them…..
It’s a sad, sad situation, made 100x worse by the equally mind dead, so called, journalists who feed these poor buggers with made up. over the top news, every bloody minute of the day straight to their Iphone…
      The mind boggles..!!!

I think you miss the point: in a real SHTF situation you don’t need to worry about your day in court.

    1. Hi Freddy,
This is not a SHTF related article – it is factual article with information on the current UK gun laws.

Whether legal or not… it´s like being forbidden directly for Englishers to defend themselves. What difference
does it make whether the guns are allowed or not ?

When you defend yourself, you become thrown into jail for a long time same as in Germany. Both are
countries that are so utterly destroyed, that they never will come up in their life time ever. When even
cops defend themselves in Germany they can get 4 years in prison for manslaughter very, very easily
even when not killing the suspect or tried manslaughter.

The attourneys are so leftist that they even top Lenin, Marx or Yagoda. Even if you are allowed to have
guns after 20 psychological tests, 10 approvals and 200 permissions…. when one defends itself with in
a clear self defense situation, it never becomes acknowledged !!! It looks fine in theory but fails in reality !
I know of what I am talking of since been robbed 2x in my house. The robbers got no penalty and when I
stopped one 3rd time, cops arrested me and asked the intruder whether I harmed him and were heart
bleeding. That he had a knife was no theme of discussion for them.

I had huge problems and did not even kill anybody. I shot the asshole into the shoulder, had reperation
to pay, the judge was polarized and on the burglar´s side. My lawyer was a loser and was no help at
all. Forget it ! With politicians as Blair or Merkel there is no hope anymore….. even when one would
be allowed to have fully automatical weapons in UK it´s useless since there is no self defense law
that covers one in such a situation, even the cops are being kicked their 3 letters in the streets.
I am glad not to be born in those 2 countries and when I would immediately move away where it´s
not sick like that . Even USA is a better option then. The worst enemy of any decent human being
is not the mugger or criminal alone, it´s the justice system when judges deny you all rights in a court.
There are so many wonderful laws written but they become overrun and not applied, ignored and
so badly abused that lady justice craves instantly of shock. Instead of investing into a gun, you guys
should buy flight tickets away from UK.

    1. Hi Sniffer,
This article is not about self defence, or using a weapon in self defence, in fact I do not mention self defence at any point.
It is purely the current UK laws appertaining to legal UK firearm ownership.
As we all know, a SHTF or self defence scenario is a completely different situation.

Sniffer, at least I know my kids are safe at school eh! Thanks to strict gun control they are in more danger to die by Alien Spaceship Intervention than to be shot by some crackpot loser that was abke to buy an automatic weapon at 7/11 the night before…No thanks pal, you just keep counting your children’s bodies and leave us (and the Germans) to decide what’s best for us

        Corrado, (in reply to “sniffer”(!?)),
Here here. I would flee from the insanity of gun drenched USA any day. By the time that school shooting that was heavily covered in the media was reported in February there had already been 18 school shootings in the first 43 days of the year. And police shoot people execution style will running away unarmed for traffic offences, or even while held face down on the floor by other officers completely restrained. These are just two globally publicised incidents that were caught on phone cameras and can be watched on YouTube etc.

Dunblane happened in 1996?! How can you use that as a comparison to the hundreds of school shootings that have happened since then in the US??

simple answer, in uk, honest citizens without FAC dont have guns, criminals dont worry about paperwork and happily have ilegal pistols, rifles, sub machine guns, shotguns, knives, swords, kitchen knives, bottles of acid. result, crims dont worry and public should. and i remember Dunblain, the one madman, the thousands of responsible gun owners and the media fed and whipped up knee jerk qovt reaction that removed not a single ilegal weapon.

To be accurate in the UK you are allowed to defend yourself with reasonable and proportionate force. Yes as in the USA there is a legal need to verify the facts and the necessity but jail or remand is only used if the force was deemed to be excessive and even then the law in general is lenient in cases of self defence. It may be possible to find cases that are badly handled but in general the law is quite clear. Some. Months back a pensioner killed a burgler and was very quickly released as it was obvious that it was self defence.
