Survival Knife Review - KA-BAR US Marine Corps Fighting and Survival KnifeKA-BAR survival knife

This is my No:1 favorite survival knife of all time – quite a strong statement to make right at the start of this review but the  KA-BAR Serrated has everything and has never let me down for any trask I have asked of it.

The  KA-BAR Serrated originates from the USA and still is still made there to this day.

old photo of ka bar knife

This all round survival knife was developed and made during World War II, and was subsequently introduced to the United States Forces around 1942.

It soon became a very firm favourite with all military personnel, unfortunately, it stopped being issued to the military after the end of WWII.

The  KA-BAR was definitely still in combat use during the Korean, Vietnam, and also the Gulf War, and still remains a very firm favourite amongst many hunters and survivalists today.

In this review I will go over the main points why this knife is always ranked up as one of the top knives and what makes it a true survival knife

KA-BAR US Marine Corps Fighting and Survival Knife

  • Weight: 0.70 pounds
  • Blade length: 7 inches
  • Overall length: 11 7/8 inches
  • Shape: Clip
  • Stamp: USMC
  • Edge angle: 20 degrees
  • Steel: 1095 Cro-Van
  • Grind: Flat
  • Handle material: Leather

The KA-BAR Full Size US Marine Corp Fighting Knife has a full tang and is extremely tough. The actual leather rings that make up the handle are compressed down through the tang, and then fixed into position by using the pommel end cap.

The very distinctive rings are machined onto the handle and then coated in a “waterproof resin lacquer” which hardens off to give the handle its solid feel.

With a full grind 7″ straight edged blade, it will hold a sharp edge for a very long time before needing any attention – making this knife so perfect for any wilderness survival situation. I have found that the KA-BAR US Marine Corps Fighting and Survival Knife uses the 1095 cro-van steel, meaning you really don’t need any specialized tools or special methods to re-sharpen the blade – no specialized diamond stones or special equipment needed – I have actually been able to re-sharpen and put a new edge on mine using a paving slab….

The actual blade shape of the KA-BAR   is extremely well finished – it has good sharp point, that’s nicely curved – this “belly” means you can perform most bushcraft and survival tasks like slice, skin and dress just about any kill with ease.

I think the straight portion of the blade is more than good enough for most other ‘normal’ survival tasks you will need when in the wilderness – as well as a very capable knife for personal protection, namely,  thrusting and slashing – plus all the second nature actions when used in a combat situation.

You can batton timber with pure ease as well as being allow you to choke down on the knife and produce some fine bushcraft skills.

The KA-BAR  is definitely an “old school” knife and a very well made cutting tool, made using traditional hand crafted methods and, of course, 1095 cro-van steel.

All this makes this knife function beautifully – as a full on survival knife, it’s in a class of its own, that’s built to stand up to any amount of abuse you can throw at it.!

My KA-BAR Knife has never let me down and served me well for many years.

All in all the KA-BAR US Marine Corps Fighting and Survival Knife is a great, high quality survival knife andI try and include it as part of my survival pack whenever I am out in the wilderness.

Best Folding Pocket Knife Reviews and Comparison Guide

A pocket knife is one of the very few knives you are POCKET KNIFElegally allowed to carry in the UK. As we all know, our knife laws are very strict and if you are caught carrying an illegal knife you could be looking at some serious repercussions.

If you are in any way in doubt, I suggest a quick trip to https://www.gov.uk/find-out-if-i-can-buy-or-carry-a-knife to see what the law says.

I would also like to add that the legalities of carrying a knife of any sort depends on the circumstances and the type of knife – a folding, NON-LOCKABLE, pocket knife is one of the few legal weapons you can carry around – but you would be setting yourself up for big problems carrying one into a football match or to a concert, if you got stopped – well, you see what I mean, depends on - ‘The Circumstances’

What is constitutes a folding pocket  knife.

  • knife with a folding blade that is fully enclosed when folded/closed
  • below 3 inches long (7.62 cm)
  • non lockable

And thats it..! The blade must not be fixed and can any be opened by actually folding the blade out – a flick knife style blade that shoots out is not folding..

  • So, for the purpose of this comparison guide I have concentrated on LEGAL pocket knives for the UK only.

So what makes the Best Folding Pocket Knife for Survival here in the UK.?

  • Blade is locked in position when closed
  • High quality blade material
  • Very light weight
  • One hand operation to open blade
  • Belt, pocket clip or own pouch

UK legal pocket knife   knife small pocket legal open blade   knife small pocket legal

This superb, non locking, classic traditional design Steel & cherry wood handle folding pocket knife, shown above is typical of a quality folding pocket knife that is perfectly UK legal.

But, what is the right knife for you?

Ask yourself this question – “what do I want to use my pocket knife for?”

If its sole purpose is for opening the odd parcel or difficult envelope then just about any will do – even a cheap one, Blunt or sharp, it won’t make much difference!

However, survival is a different thing altogether and if you will be using it for survival purposes then you you need to consider what these are.

EDC, hunting, skinning, cooking and even self defence. These are all considerations when choosing a new folding pocket knife.

Avoid buying cheap.

Never be tempted to buy a knife because its cheap – but fortunately, folding pocket knives are relatively inexpensive, in fact a quality ‘hand made’ knife, using high end materials will only set you back between £35 – £75

Below you can see a typical Handmade Damascus Folding knife with a Stag Antler handle and costs around £45 – that pretty good for a handmade knife if you ask me..!

Be aware theres a lot of inferior steel and crappy alloy out there that the foreign manufacturers make many goods from – the result is a knife thats next to useless in any survival situation – a good, tried and tested manufacturer has a reputation to keep any would never produce an inferior blade.

Some knife have the manufacturers stamp on them allowing you to return any knife that your not happy with or even return it for repair or restoration – a trusted brand is something to always go with.

Below is a comparison guide to some of the Best Folding Pocket Knife for the UK.

How To Sharpen Knives The Easy Way

how to sharpen knives, gerber knife sharpenerAs a prepper you will have acquired the odd survival knife or two, also a multi tool and probably a Swiss Army Knife as well – am I right.?!

When you bought them new, they came nice and sharp and ready for action – you make even of fine tuned them and touched up the blade with a fine whetstone and a stope and now they are perfect and razor sharp.

When you use your knives they will slowly become blunt and that nice fine edge will require a bit of TLC – so back to the workbench and out with the grinding stone and whetstone once again.

The problem comes when your knife becomes blunt and doesn’t perform as you want it to and you’re out in the wild – there’s no where to plug your grinder in out there!

Carrying a bulky whetstone around is not really an option either, so how can you do an emergency re-sharpen of your knives in this type of situation?

Well, it’s actually not that difficult to re-sharpen your knife and get that nice sharp blade back again, wherever you are.

Knife sharpening is a skill in itself, even when you are working at the bench in perfect conditions, but out in the field its a different matter, so knowing how to sharpen knives the easy way is an essential part of prepping and survival.

This is my favourite knife sharpening tool that I carry with my in my rucksck at all times – the Gerber Field Sharpener, and very good it is too.. From the top knife and survival manufacturers, Gerber, and also endorsed by the TV survival celebrity, Bear Grylls.

I normally try and steer away from products that have a TV celeb promoting them, but on this occasion I must say the Bear Grylls endorsed Sharpener is a very good piece of survival kit.

It is extremely compact, robust and light, making it the perfect tool for my bug out bag. It answers the question of how to sharpen knives the easy way when you need them the sharp the most – and that’s always when you’re out in the wild….

serrated edge on knofe being sharpenedserrated edge being sharpened with gerber This clever knife sharpener will not only sharpen a flat blade, but is also capable of sharpening a serrated blade knife.

There are two sizes of diamond grit rods that enables you to put a new edge on any sized serrated blade.

Big or small knife, it works, as you can see here in the photos:

I was out video reviewing some HI-Tec Hiking boots recently and needed to use my knife – however, is was not as sharp as usual and so I also videod the ‘emergency’ re-sharpen with the trusted Gerber knife sharpener – this is my review:

  • Overall Length: 4.5″
  • Total Weight: 2.3 oz.
  • Steel Type: SS416 Grit 400
  • Coarse Carbide Insert
  • Fine Ceramic Insert

As you can see from my short video, this is an excellent tool to carry with you and I highly recommend you buy one for you bug out bag as part of your survival kit.

I hope you have found this review article on ‘How to Sharpen Knives the Easy Way’ helpfull.

Best Swiss Army Knife Guide

When it come to utility knives the very first name that we all think of is the good old Swiss Army Knife.Victorinox Swiss Army Huntsman Pocket Knife

Without doubt the most recognizable name in utility knives there has ever been.

The Swiss Army Knife is a genuine survival tool and has evolved to give the essential tools any prepper would want in a survival situation.

In the range there are many designs with different blade and tool configurations to choose from, but all will give the same build quality and reliability.

They are, in effect, a precision made knife through and through.

What is the best Swiss Army Knife?

All of their range offers something for everyone – but what knife is the most versatile for a preppers use?

Having owned quite a few utility knives I can genuinely say I always come back to one in particular – it has always offered everything I have needed in any camping or survival trip and has never let me down.

My choice of the Best Swiss Army Knife is the Victorinox Swiss Army Huntsman Pocket Knife, and I would recommend this over any other knife in this category. It is ideal for EDC or carrying on a keyring.

Knife are the features:  Optional Accessories:
  1. large blade
  2. small blade
  3. can opener
  4. small screwdriver
  5. corkscrew
  6. reamer, punch
  7. wood saw
  8. key ring
  9. toothpick
  10. tweezers
  11. multi-purpose hook (parcel carrier)
  12. cap lifter with
  13. large screwdriver
  14. wire stripper
  15. scissors

Pocket Knife Sharpener

Victorinox Black Leather Pouch

The Victorinox Swiss Army Huntsman Pocket Knife is perfect for preppers, offering a wide range of utilities for many of the survival tasks needed in an emergency.

I think the Huntsman is just the right size to fit in your hand without being too bulky and really doesn’t need any more blades or gadgets – extra would only really add to the weight and the bulkiness.

I think the tweezers are a great tool and actually work really well. The can opener takes a little practice but also works well once mastered.

swiss army knife reamer tool

The reamer/punch is another handy tool that is supplied blunt for some reason?

I have put a point edge onto mine (see photo on the left here) and find it works much better – it’s the perfect tool for making new eyelet holes and for piercing “stuff”.

All the other blades come nice and sharp and will hold an edge for a very long time maintaining their sharpness.

I would definitely invest in the Pocket Knife Sharpener - this is a great little tool and works really well – of course, for a full on razor edge it will need a bit more work – but the Pocket Knife Sharpener will give you a more than acceptable, sharp edge in a matter of seconds.

All the blades and tools are nice and free running and open easily when you first get your Huntsman, however, it is definitely worth investing in some of the VICTORINOX Multi Tool Oil – whenever I give my knives a service I always go to my local garage and give them a good blast with their airline first to shift the real grit.

Victorinox actually say to run under water for a minute then leave to dry! But whatever method you use, a little drop of the oil works wonders –  and a small bottle is under £10 all in, from Amazon

Victorinox have also brought out a full range of different coloured bodies for the Huntsman, although everyone knows the Swiss Army Knife is red, I suppose its nice to have a choice….

I definitely, would not be without my Swiss Army Knife, and generally carry it with me at all time. You will be surprised at how many times you use it throughout a day  -  it’s a mini toolbox all in one..!

White Hunter Damascus steel  fixed Blade Survival Knife Review knife white hunter

Firstly, the White Hunter is a hand made, hand crafted survival knife of a very high quality and, in a lot of respect, is a true ‘collectors’ survival knife.

It is made in the true, traditional survival knife style and looks and feels every bit a real mean machine.!

The

The White Hunter Damascus Steel fixed blade survival knife is made from four different low and high carbon steels and folded into 416 layers to give you a knife of some 311mm long with the blade length of 188mm – and at its widest point the blade is some  1 1/2″ (37mm) wide. AND …. the blade is also 5mm thick, making this one tough cookie.!

The original Puma White Hunter was made in the 50′s and featured a stag horn handle. But the Damascus Blade White Hunter   is every bit the same great hunting and survival knife as the original.

knife white hunter tang

knife white huhnter handle

It’s a full tang knife with walnut handle that has a polished brass thumb guard and brassbolts that give this knife a very authentic look.

knife white hunter sheath

The sheath is made up from one piece genuine leather and has traditional pop studs to hold the knife in place. The stitching is excellent and its also riveted together to give additional strength.

There is only one belt loop for attaching the knife to your belt.

Specifications:

  • Limited Edition Knife – based on the classic ‘White Hunter’ all round camp knife
  • Full tang
  • Blade – Damascus steel – 416 layers
  • Length – 311mm
  • Blade Length – 188mm
  • Spear point blade with additional 50mm serrated edge
  • Brass hand guard and bolts
  • Walnut handle. Made from gun-stock offcuts
  • Heavy duty sheath – hand made

Conclusions:

Overall, a nice high quality knife with a reasonable price tag that will perform all the normal survival duties. For anyone who prefers the larger knife, then this is well worth a look.

Don’t be put of by the idea that it’s more of a collectors survival knife – it isn’t – it’s a big knife in the big boys league…

Gerber’s Bear Grylls Ultimate Fixed Blade Knife (Fine Edge) Review Gerber's Bear Grylls Ultimate Fixed Bladed Knife (Fine Edge)

Keep in mind this review is not on the Ultimate Pro but on the Bear Grylls Ultimate Fixed Bladed Knife only.

I do have my review of the Ultimate pro – use the links at bottom of the page.

Knife Features:

  • Full Fine Cutting Edge using high carbon stainless steel with a drop point blade
  • Textured Rubber Grip – Maximizes comfort and reduces slippage
  • The Ultimate has a ¾ tang
  • Stainless Steel Pommel – At base of handle for hammering
  • Emergency Whistle – Incorporated into lanyard cord

Sheath Features:

  • Includes a Ferro-cerium fire starting rod that locks into the sheath with a striker notch incorporated into back of the knife blade
  • Nylon Sheath  is lightweight, military-grade
  • A Diamond Sharpener is integrated into the sheath for on-the-go sharpening
  • Survival Pocket guide, which contains Bear’s survival essentials

My association with Gerber goes back for years, and after years of using their products, I have come to trust and rely on them. Gerber’s Bear Grylls Ultimate Fixed Blade Knife (Fine Edge) is ready right out of the box and is one you too can rely on as well.

I put any knife I own through the paces because I use them as a tool for survival and my knives are not something I put over the fireplace or swaddle in velvet, they are tools of the trade.Knife Bear-Grylls-Ultimate-Fine-Edge-review fish gutting

I have skinned small game with this knife and while the blade is carbon stainless, it does hold an edge rather well. A stainless steel blade is of course softer than a carbon steel blade, but you should know that going into it. I carry a skinner and a survival knife like this one but in a survival situation if you only have the Gerber Ultimate you can skin game without any problem.

This knife is not just a skinning knife, or whittling knife it is an all around knife, which is what any survival knife you carry should be. Carbon steel holds an edge better but it is much harder to put an edge on and then you have the corrosion that comes with carbon steel. In the woods, you can touch up a stainless steel blade with virtually anything to include a course rock, fine sandpaper or the file blade on most multi-tools.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Fine Edge Knife does come with a built in sharpener in the sheath but I do not use it because I like to hone blades on diamond stones or whetstones and do not necessarily trust a sharpener when I cannot see how much metal it is taking off.

However, the fact that it is there and ready to use at all times is definitely a plus for the overall knife setup.

I have tried the sharpener included with the Ultimate on some utility knives I have around and it will bring back a very dull blade but from my standpoint not ideal for honing.

bear grylls wood battoning

I split wood with the Ultimate by setting the blade in the wood and using another piece of wood to strike the backside of the blade.

It holds up well and walks through the wood. Of course, you cannot split chunks for the stove but to make kindling or to split the ends of a sapling for a fishing or game spear point it is ideal.

I thought that the three quarter tang would be a problem and it is psychologically because I know it’s not full tang but it has not been a problem mechanically.

bear grlls ferro rod

The Ferro rod is quality and if you have, a good survival knife like Gerber’s Bear Grylls Ultimate Fixed Blade Knife (Fine Edge) and a means to start a fire you can pretty much survive in any situation.

My objective is not to carry a dozen knives or tools but to carry only a few that can do dozen of jobs and the addition of the ferro rod is a nice touch.

Theres also an emergency whistle thats attached via a short lanyard and a survival guide thats slipped into the back of the sheath as well – just little touches, but well thought out.

Pros

  • Strong enough to be called a survival knife, holds an edge well and takes an edge easier than a carbon steel blade
  • Handle is well built and grips well when wet and is very comfortable so very little hand fatigue when using it for carving or laborious chores. It is obvious that Bear Grylls had a hand in all of the features because it takes an expert to know what a good knife should be all about
  • Comes with a fire starter that actually works and a distress whistle
  • No flex in the blade whatsoever, which means the blade is sized based on the handle length. Some so-called survival knives have blades that flex like a fillet knife but this one is solid and you just know it will get the cutting job done
  • Just plain looks good
  • The sheath carries well on the belt and does not add any significant weight so your trousers do not feel like they are falling off. The sheath does not get in the way when you are sitting at home or even in a vehicle
  • Drop point blade means you can use it for plunge cuts making it is less likely you will break the point, however there is a limit to how hard you can strike down when plunging into ice for example

Cons

  • While it advertises a stainless steel pommel for hammering at the base of the handle it is not of much use for hammering in stakes to secure a tarp or poncho to the ground. You should not purchase the knife solely for emergency extractions from a vehicle because the pommel is not specifically designed to be a glass-breaker
  • In my mind there is no reason not to make a quality knife full tang so I do not quite understand the three quarter tang on the Bear Grylls Ultimate Fixed Blade Knife (Fine Edge)
  • I would have preferred the whistle be incorporated into the sheath instead of on the lanyard or dummy cord as some call it. I never use a lanyard unless temporarily strapping something to a pack otherwise, it just gets in the way and I was afraid of smashing the whistle if it stayed attached to the knife. A whistle is important so I took it off and strapped it to my pack instead
  • The blade sharpener is good for emergency sharpening if you are in the bush without a diamond stone or fine whetstone but it may take more metal off the blade than most would be comfortable with, if you do use the sharpener you will need to use a leather strop on the blade to remove the burrs

Conclusions on this knife:

Essentially the Bear Grylls Ultimate Fixed Blade Knife (Fine Edge) is ideal for bug-out-bags, everyday carry, survival kits, camping holidays and for hunting trips.

It can be carried around the house for everyday cutting jobs because it fits well and carries nicely on your belt and sized perfectly for most cutting jobs you would find around the house.

As a pure survival knife it works very well and is definitely worth the money at around £50 inc VAT and delivery, offering you good value for your money, for a quality bit of kit  -  it’s got the pedigree of Gerber and I think it’s well worth considering adding to your prepping kit.

However -

Although a good survival knife. I would definitely consider going up a notch and buying the far better, upgraded Ultimate Pro see my full review here

Buck Survival Knife, Punk, 5160 Carbon Review knife review Buck Punk

Specifications of the Buck Survival Knife, Punk, 5106 Carbon:

  • Comes with a heavy duty M.O.L.L.E. compatible nylon sheath that includes a storage pouch
  • The Knife undergoes a heat treatment process in specific temperature controlled atmospheres, which optimizes the steel’s edge retention and strength, corrosion resistance, and allows the hardness to be set to 57-59 HRC
  • Sheath can be adjusted for high or low hip carry and features dual retention methods for safety
  • Blade Length is 14.3 cm (5-5/8″)
  • Blade Steel is 5160 Carbon Steel with added powder coat finish for corrosion resistance
  • Weight is 209.8g (7.4 oz.) for knife only and 371.4g (13.1 oz.) with the Sheath

I have owned various types of Buck knife for the better part of 30 years. They had been lock blades until I saw this one. The Buck Survival Knife, Punk, 5160 Carbon is one slick and tough looking knife and once I got it home and started putting it through its paces I realised it is as tough as it looks.

It is a survival knife in the truest sense of the word. Use it for an everyday carry, survival kits, and go-bags or for around the house chores if you spend time outside. I used it the other day to trim a rose bush because I did not feel like hunting around for the pruning shears.

buck knives logoOwning a Buck knife means I do not have to think about quality, I know it is a quality product because of years of owning one. The Buck Survival Knife, Punk, 5160 Carbon knife is no different but it is different from any other Buck knife I have owned.

Finally, a knife manufacturer has made a sheath as good as the knife. I really get aggravated when I buy a first rate knife and the sheath is almost like an afterthought.

This is a tactical sheath in every sense of the word.

buck punk knife sheath

The knife is secured and none of this “cutting up the sheath” getting the knife in and out. Buck has that covered so the sheath will hold up. Other knives I have do cut the nylon sheaths getting them in and out because there are no guards to keep the blade from slicing the sides and bottom up, when it goes in and out.

The sheath has a cord so you can strap it to your leg. Securing the sheath to your leg allows you to remove the knife one handed.

Most sheath knives that do not have a way to secure it to your leg require you to use two hands to pull the knife, one hand to hold the sheath and another to pull the knife, not good if one hand is injured or restrained.

The Buck Survival Knife, Punk, 5160 Carbon stays sharp and I mean sharp enough to shave with if you needed to. The blade is heavy enough so when you have to cut rope under tension a one handed swipe and the lines are cut making it ideal for cutting webbing or seat belt restraints if there is tension on them otherwise for safety use one hand to hold the material to be cut when using the knife.

The blade is hard, very hard and once you have an edge on it will stay on it. The Buck is ideal for a backup skinning knife. Not really shaped well for a skinner in my opinion but the blade will take much of the work out of skinning small game.

*for skinning knives see our Best Survival Knife Guide.

Pros:

  • Heavy duty blade stays sharp
  • Looks good and the blade is shaped for quick cutting and the finger indent on the blade side allows you to “choke up” on the blade for precise handling
  • Even though it carbon steel the blade has not shown any signs of corrosion

Cons:

  • Handle is a little thinner than I care for but does not really take away from any job you would need the knife for

The Buck Survival Knife, Punk, 5160 Carbon is an all around good knife and is ideal for any job around the home or camp or any tactical situation you may end up in.

Tom Brown Tracker Knife Review tom brown tracker knife in sheath

This is my review of the Tom Brown Tracker, Gray Micarta Handle, 6.25″ Black Blade, Kydex Model TPT010

Manufactures Description and Specifications

  • Made from 1/4″ 1095 High Carbon Alloy
  • Coated in traction epoxy to help prevent rusting
  • 11.5″ long overall length
  • 2.5″ carving blade
  • 3.5″ chopping blade
  • Handle is Micarta
  • Includes kydex sheath
  • The Tom Brown Tracker is made for chopping, splitting, carving and, hammering. You can also use the tracker to scrape, saw and even break metal wire by twisting and stressing the wire using the serrations on the backside.

tom brown tracker knife with yellow rope

When I first received the Tom Brown Tracker as a gift I thought that it would be heavy, clumsy and would end up gathering dust somewhere. I thought why not just carry a small camp axe instead, but I was wrong. This knife turned out to be one of my favourite’s knives I keep in my survival/hunting pack. I do not use the tracker for everyday carry because it is a large knife and can be intimidating and a bit awkward to carry for everyday chores.

I have used this knife as an axe on multiple occasions and routinely reach for it instead of my camp axe. It is ideal for any survival pack or bug-out-bag. However, I would not consider it an everyday carry knife.

tom brown tracker knife CARVING

tom brown tracker knife splittingBecause of the way the blade is designed on the The Tom Brown Tracker, you can also do smaller tasks like carving wooden fishhooks or putting a point on a spear or ground stake. The chopping blade is heavy enough to split large pieces of firewood, or chop down small trees or shear limbs.

I have put this knife through multiple camp holidays, hunting trips and just plain living in the woods for a few weeks at a time.

It holds up to every survival task and is always ready for more action.

I do not care for the standard sheath. It is stiff and just does not feel right as I am afraid the knife will slip out and it is noisy when inserting or removing. The sheath should not be carried in a tactical situation where noise could be an issue.

I am currently looking for suitable replacement for the sheath. I like leather or good heavy nylon sheaths.

tom brown tracker blade notchThe saw blade is ideal for notching if you are making deadfall traps or even weakening larger tom brown tracker shower notched woodpieces of wood so they can be broken. It would be difficult to saw completely through a large limb but the saw blade will remove enough wood so the limb can be broken or then use the chopping blade to finish it off.

The saw blade does not provide precision cuts it will remove chucks of wood in a hurry however.  If you are measuring closely for shelter poles and so on, make sure, you account for the roughness of the cut.

I use the Tom Brown Tracker for field dressing game so it can be transported. The saw blade will help you separate the bones from the joints. It acts just like a meat cleaver but it is not a good skinner but then again it is not designed to be one.

It feels good in the hand partly because of the good balance and because of the Micarta handle. Micarta is a composite material usually made from linen or canvas – the material is layered and treated with a resin and then heated while under pressure to make an extremely strong yet lightweight handle material.

The Tracker is a multi-tool and something any wilderness survival expert looks for. If this was the only tool you had, you could build a shelter, chop wood for a fire, create tools out of wood and use the metal for striking against flint to create a fire. Very versatile and stout, once I felt the knife in my hand and chopped my first limb I was hooked.

Tom Brown Tracker, Gray Micarta Handle, 6.25″ Black Blade, Kydex Model TPT010

Pros:

  • Very good quality carbon steel this knife is designed by an expert in the field
  • Multiple uses
  • Blade stays sharp and can stand up to the rigors of camp life
  • Looks great and feels good in the hand, you want to use this knife and once you receive one you will look for things to do with it
  • Big but not bulky and is designed for practically any sized hand
  • Reduced hand fatigue when chopping or sawing.

Cons:

  • Even though the blade is treated to help prevent rusting it wears off quickly and rust will appear just like on any carbon steel. This is not a problem for anyone accustomed to carbon steel but really, there is no point in using the “traction epoxy” to help prevent rusting as a selling point. Anyone familiar with carbon steel knows to treat it to prevent corrosion, but some may assume because of the rust inhibitor that they do not have to pay as close of attention
  • Sheath is not as good as I would have liked or expected

I hope you have enjoyed this review and it has helped you when choosing the best survival knife for your prepping needs. Without doubt, the Tom Brown Tracker is one of the better knives I have and it gets plenty of use. I do not carry it on my belt however because of the sheath and its size but it is easily clipped to a pack.  I am not easy on my tools out in the woods but It’s definitely a knife that’s made for tough chores and full on survival.

Best Billhook for Survival Guide man using a billhook machete

The billhook is a relatively unknown preppers tool that will do many survival tasks and is often the preferred “larger Knife’ being able to do the heavy duty survival work that is often needed with ease.

This “big knife” was traditionally used as a basic cutting tool on farms to trim bushes and hedges before the introduction of the powered hedge trimmers.

But it has many uses as a survival tool and is an essential prepping item to add to your bug out kit and survival equipment.

Billhook Design

The design dates back many centuries but the overall shape has remained the same over the years, as is the blade and handle materials.

double edged billhook

The blade is generally made from a medium graded carbon steel of different weights and lengths, but on average you find most blades are  200 to 300mm in length. With the handle being between 120 -160mm long. This can give a potential overall length of some 460mm which is a pretty powerful weapon in anyones hands.

Generally the blade is only kept sharp on the inside of the curve, but you can also get a double-edged billhook which has another bladed edge on the back.

The blade is relatively thick as they used primarily for cutting thicker timber and woody vegetation. The end of the blade or ‘nose’ is quite often thickened so as to move the sweet spot much further forward.

The shaped design of the blade forms a hook at the very front of the blade. The idea here is to make it more efficient to trim smaller branches when stripping them off a larger branch and also the rounded end makes chopping easier and more effective when a chopping rounded object like a tree trunk.

The Billhook give you a nice large cutting surface and the curved hook certainly does help when your cutting and billhook trimming timber baranchtrimming small branches. You can also use it more like a standard survival knife for smaller, more fiddly, finer detailed trimming and shaping.

Of course there are some tasks that aren’t good for it. The number one is splitting wood, because there is no wedge shape as such, like you see on an axe, you will ruin the cutting blade edge due to being so much thinner than an axe.

If you try to use a double edged type, you will, of course, completely wreck the edge and the blade.!!

Best Knife Sharpener for Survival Knife knife sharp edge

So what is the Best Knife Sharpener for Survival Knife for us preppers to use.? It’s all very well having a couple of nice survival knives and a multi tool knife but one of the most important things about your knife is its blade sharpness - especially if you use it when hunting for skinning or gutting.

A sharp blade makes life so much easier and makes it a pleasure to use your knife. So keeping the blade sharp is an essential part of maintaining your knife.

But what is the Best Knife Sharpener for a Survival Knife.?

Basically, knife sharpeners are divided into two categories -

  • Attached to the knife sheath
  • Separate from the knife

Normally, knife sharpeners that are attached to the sheath or come with the knife itself are quite specific to that particular knife – typically the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro - has an integral knife sharpener that is part of the sheath and the blade clips into this to be sharpened. (an excellent system, but only on the pro version) Other knives have sharpeners clipped or attached to the sheath that can be removed when needed.

But for the purpose of this Best Knife Sharpener for Survival Knife review I have selected blade sharpeners that are separate from the knife and can be carried in a separate pouch, clipped to a keyring or on a lanyard.

The table below shows a unique comparison chart for the top 5 knife sharpeners. Giving a comparison between:

  • price
  • style
  • knife blade size

  •  Use the arrows to help choose the top sharpener for your needs.

For a razor sharp professional finish on your survival knife blade you will need to ‘upgrade’ to a honing stone to get the best knife honing stonefinish.

The most common and generally considered the best type is a wet honing stone system.

Typically, something like the DC4 – Diamond Ceramic Whetstone - this stone sharpener is nice and compact and can easily be carried as part of your bug out kit. I would highly recommend the DC4 as it can also be used without water or oil on the surface yet will produce a superb razor edge on your knife.

I hope our, Best Knife Sharpener for Survival Knife guide has helped you to see what’s generally available in the knife sharpening world  for us UK Preppers. Remember, a sharp knife is a happy knife..!

Gerber Warrant Tanto Fixed Blade Survival Knife Review KNIFE gerber warrant tanto

  • Machined Aluminum Handle – Lightweight
  • Full Tang
  • Stainless Steel
  • Titanium Nitride coated blade – no reflective
  • All Black – For discreet use
  • Partially Serrated Tanto Point Tactical Blade
  • Window Breaking Pommel Butt
  • Digital Camo Sheath
  • Snap Sheath Closure – With elastic pommel retention
  • Molle Compatible Sheath and leg strapping
  • Elastic Pommel Retainer

For any prepper looking for a Tanto blade style survival knife the Gerber Warrant Tanto Fixed Blade Knife
is a survival knife well certainly worth considering, if not as your main knife, but definately as your spare.

KNIFE gerber warrant tanto 2It looks and feels like a solid knife and is certainly well made – something you would expect from Gerber – It’s nicely proportioned and has a confortable balanced feel to it.

In essence, the knife itself is an all round nice bit of kit, especially for those preppers that prefer the serrated edge knife over a smooth bladed knife – the serrations are ‘chisel type’ – this means serrated on one side only with the other side flat.

Possibly the one main concern I have is the handle is aluminium with a bit of machining for added grip – not to my liking when using with wet hands.

The sheath is nylon with a the right features to make it fully wearable on the belt or leg as well as being Molle compatible - nice…

All in all a good nice that will do the job at a sensible price.

Mora Heavy Duty Robust Carbon Survival Knife Review KNIFE Mora heavy duty compainion

Firstly, this knife is not full tang. Normally I would never advocate a non full tang knife but I have included this Mora knife as it really is fantastic value for money.

It is actually about a 1/3 tang and unless you are using this knife for battonning or doing a lot of levering and hammering it ticks a lot of survival boxes.

Probably the biggest plus is the weight as it really is very light weight and quite compact at just 225mm long so slipping the Mora Heavy Duty Carbon Steel to your Bug Out Bag wont be a problem.

The Heavy Duty Mora has been beefed up with a 3.2mm carbon steel thick blade and really keeps a good edge for fine work – In fact, if anything, this is one of the best skinning knives around and just so cheap and good value for money.

knife mora heavy duty companion sizesThis is a compact knife with a blade length of just over 100mm and overall 220mm, but still has a decent full size handle that feels good and sturdy.

Conclusion:

Quite simply the best value for money survival knife around – NOT in the big boys leauge but you will find a use for this handy, robust and strong little knife and for the price, you cant go wrong..

Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro Knife – Fine Edge – Knife Reviewknife gerber ultimate bear grylls pro

The Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro is the upgraded and updated version of the standard Bear Grylls ultimate knife. These upgrades have taken this, already good, knife into the ‘big boys’ league.

As the old saying goes, ‘a knife is only as good as it’s blade’ and gerber have upgraded this knifes blade and made it from 9Cr19MoV high carbon, stainless steel AND increased the blade width giving extra toughness and edge-holding ability.

  • The Blade

They have also made the Ultimate Pro to a full tang survival knife, with the higher quality carbon steel blade now running from knife tip to pummel.

Staying with the blade, you only get a choice of the fine edge blade – the serrated blade is not available – which, to be honest, is preferable anyway, as a fine edged blade is considered the best type of blade for survival. The knife also comes pretty sharp, straight out of the box – sharp enough to shave hairs from your arm..!

You can get this even sharper with some fine honing if required – just to get it razor sharp – but all in all a very good blade, sharp and holds an edge well.

knife gerber bear grylls ultimate pro pommel

  • The Pommel.

Along with the full tang knife, Gerber have beefed up the pommel end which makes it even better when battoning, chopping and striking.

you can hit this knife with a club hammer and bury the blade into a log without any problem or fear of damaging the knife – the log wont be too happy though..!

knife gerber ulimate pro spear

  •  The Handle

The handle and grip on Gerber Ultimate Pro  feels really comfortable and solid and is made up from TPE Overmold, a kind of rubberised nylon, that fits very comfortably into your hand. Gerber have put a ‘slab’ either side of the tang and bolted it all together making one solid piece of kit.

There are also two holes that go right through the handle grips and the tang making this and excellent knife for lashing to a pole and thus forming a spear.

  • The Sheath

knife gerber ulimate pro sheathGerber have made some improvements with this one – producing a very nice and effective knife sheath for the Ultimate Pro  - However it is not without its faults – the knife is held by a friction stop and clicks nicely into place by means of a couple of raised clips  - you have to use the Pro Sheath as it will only fit the Pro Knife only – the stitching on the straps is good and seams to be a type of waterproof rubberised stitching which is very nice.

The handle strap is Velcro and works well – there are two belt straps – top and bottom, however, the main belt strap is really not that big and if you wear a wide belt wider than 2″ you will have problems getting it to fit right.

The sheath is also not suitable for the MollE system, which is a shame.! Another good point is the upgrade knife sharpener that is now fitted on the front of the sheath and offers a left or right handed option by just changing a couple of screws – it’s a simple pull system that just about anyone can use to get an edge back on the knife – very nice.

  • Fire Starterknife gerber ulimate pro ferro rod

As usual the Ultimate Pro  feature a very good quality Ferro Rod fire starter that is positioned, right way up, on the front of the sheath and works very well with little effort producing a stream of sparks.

  • Extras
  1. Gerber also include the Bear Grylls essential survival pocket guide which is conveniently positioned on the back of the sheath and is water proof. A nice little extra that shows essential survival, with pictures, on things like building a shelter, collecting water, trapping and signalling.
  2. The knife also comes with a short lanyard with an emergency signalling whistle attached

Specifications:

  • Overall Length: 10″
  • Blade Length : 4 .8″
  • Weight: l3.7oz. with Sheath
  • Steel Type: 9Crl9MoV high carbon stainless steel
  • Handle Material: TPE Overmold
  • Blade – Fine Edge
  • Drop point blade
  • Integrated carbide sharpener
  • Ferro Rod fire starter
  • Emergency lanyard and whistle

Below is a very good video review of the Ultimate Pro. It shows why this knife is one of the very best, with some great feature you just don’t get on other survival knives.

Take a look and and I think you will see why most preppers should consider this knife.!

  • Conclusions

Well,  this is a good knife – look beyond the hype and the big Bear Grylls thing that’s going around at the moment and consider the quality of manufacturer. I really don’t think you will go wrong with this knife – it pretty much ticks all the boxes for us UK Preppers.

Yes, it’s a bit pricey, but it is a fantastic upgrade from the Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Fine Edge Knife

and a quality bit of survival kit that can hold its own against most other knives in this category.

Gerber LMF II Infantry Fixed Blade Review Gerber LMF II Infantry

The Gerber LMF II Infantry Fixed Blade Knife is certainly a top rated survival knife for preppers. Especially as it is manufactured by one of the top, mainstream knife suppliers – Gerber.

I really like this knife a lot for many reasons and make it one of my top survival knives to own.

The Gerber LMF II Infantry Fixed Blade Knife is manufacture without the normally sort after ‘full tang’ – instead it has a 3/4 tang that runs within the handle grip but not to the very end.  I immediately bring this point to your attention as  there will be many UK Preppers that insist on only having full tang survival knives in their survival kit.

But Gerber have a method in their madness.!  And actually, it makes quite a bit of sense in the case of this particular survival knife.

The 3/4 tang makes sense -

  •  The pummel at the end of the handle incorporates a ‘bit gap’  - a separation between end of tang and pummel end – this allows for the cutting of ‘live’ electrical wires without getting a shock transferred through the tang into the handle. Also, the pommel end itself can be used for hammering with minimal shock transferred to the hand of the user.

knife gerber lmf ii pummel endThe Gerber LMF II Infantry Fixed Blade Knife was originally designed for the US Airforce as a full on survival knife and has every good characteristic you would expect from such a breeding. Sticking with the pummel end, this is very solid ‘V’ shape and makes for an excellent impact weapon or a tool for smashing out a glass window if need be, so you can see this has been thought through…

This knife measures just over 10 1/2″ long with approx a 60/40 handle to blade split and is larger than most survival knives so therefore a little heavier – not the sort of knife you go for a weekend family camping – but with that little bit extra weight come a more solid, heavy duty bit of kit – ideal for survival and preppers. The handle is made from a form of nylon and is very comfortable and also gives good grip when wet, almost non slip I would say. The blade works well in all situations and, again, is thicker and tougher than most and works well doing all survival chores..

The Gerber LMF II Infantry Fixed Blade Knife also comes with a very high quality sheath – one of the best I would say – knife gerber lmf ii sheaththat holds your knife secure and safe when not in use. There are multiple fixing points and webbing connections that make it easy to fit to most bug out bags, belts and MollE straps – it can also be worn around the leg. There is also a knife blade sharpener incorporated into the sheath for emergencies – but you can’t get a razor sharp edge with it, but certainly good enough to clean up the blade and give a sharp edge.

Specifications:

-Overall Length:  10.59 inches

-Blade Length:  4.84 inches

-Weight:  11.39 ounces

Overall I really do like The Gerber LMF II Infantry Fixed Blade Knife - OK it’s a bit pricey – but you’re getting a top notch bit of survival kit and when it comes to a survival knife, a good one is essential for any UK prepper…..

policeman stopping and searchWhat are the UK stop and search law

The UK stop and search law is quite well defined and both you and the police have specific rights to help and protect both parties during a search.

The main thing to remember if you are ever in that situation is:

Being searched doesn’t mean you’re being arrested.

As a prepper we generally have a different take on weapon ownership as we need certain  weapons and tools to ensure complete preparation and readiness if there were to be an emergency survival scenario.

The police have powers to stop and question you at any time – they can search you depending on the situation.

A police community support officer (PCSO) must be in uniform when they stop and question you. A police officer doesn’t always have to be in uniform but if they’re not wearing uniform they must show you their warrant card.

Stop and question: police powers

A police officer has powers to stop you at any time and ask you:

  • what you’re doing
  • why you’re in an area and/or where you’re going

However, you don’t have to answer any questions the police officer asks you.

Stop and search: police powers

A police officer has powers to stop and search you if they have ‘reasonable grounds’ to suspect you’re carrying:

  • illegal drugs
  • a weapon
  • stolen property
  • something which could be used to commit a crime, eg a crowbar

You can only be stopped and searched without reasonable grounds if it has been approved by a senior police officer. This can happen if it is suspected that:

  • serious violence could take place
  • you’re carrying a weapon or have used one
  • you’re in a specific location or area

Before you’re searched

Before you’re searched the police officer must tell you:

  • their name and police station
  • what they expect to find, eg drugs
  • the reason they want to search you, eg it looks like you’re hiding something
  • why they are legally allowed to search you
  • that you can have a record of the search and if this isn’t possible at the time, how you can get a copy

Removing clothing: police powers

A police officer can ask you to take off your coat, jacket or gloves.

The police might ask you to take off other clothes and anything you’re wearing for religious reasons – eg a veil or turban. If they do, they must take you somewhere out of public view.

If the officer wants to remove more than a jacket and gloves they must be the same sex as you.

Being searched doesn’t mean you’re being arrested.
