Features of these very simple DIY homemade fire starters:

When your out backpacking or camping or when wild camping, a fire is essential for many survival tasks.
Being able to light that fire both quickly and efficiently is essential especially if your fuel (wood) is damp or wet.
A fire starter will give you the edge over the elements and make things a lot easier and simpler, allowing you to focus on the jobs in hand.
Spending unnecessary time and effort to get a simple fire going is poor prepping management, but having firestarters, whether homemade or shop bought will ease that pressure right from the off.
In this article: I cover how you make your own 'custom' fire starters using very basic materials. These materials you already have in your home and within no time you will produce dozens of functional fire starters to store and use when out in the wild camping.
You only need two components and a melting can:
Firstly, get yourself some wax, I use Clear Wax Blocks that I bought for Ebay.
But you could also use any old wax.
You can even use wax crayons, that way you'll have pretty snazzy fire starters at the end.

Clear Wax Blocks
Secondly, you can use an old mop from the cupboard or go out and buy yourself a nice new one.

Old Mop Head
I used an old, used mop and it works fine.
Cut off strips to the size you want - I cut mine at 2" long, just the right size to fit in my fire starting container,

Fire Starter Storage
To see the full, start to finish process, take a look at the video below:
One thing I must mention:
I used a tin can directly on my ceramic hob to melt the wax. Although it worked well, I've been told there is a chance of the wax overheating and possibly catching fire!
I now melt the wax by putting the tin can in a bowl of boiler hot water instead.
It's a lot slower, but in hindsight probably the better way, especially if you don't pay attention or get distracted!

I hope this article on how to make simple DIY fire starters was helpful:
These DIY Fire Starters were easy to make and worked very well.
I now have yet another means to successfully light a fire when out in the woods or backpacking.

"Post Apocalyptic Humour At Its Best"
The Citizen Survivor's Handbook' is primarily a work of fiction. However, the book is quite influenced by the propaganda that was published in Britain during the 1940s.
During this time and more specifically after the British evacuation of Dunkirk, there was a very real, plausible and imminent threat of Nazi invasion as part of their Operation Sea Lion.
The British citizens would always be on the alert for the ominous drone of the air-raid sirens as they went about their daily chores and work.
The fact that not only could your home be destroyed in a Blitzkrieg, a terrifying mass attack of aerial bombardment, at any moment, but it was in equally plausible that the Wehrmacht could goose-step through the roads of your very own town.

Winston Churchill
That terrible situation is incredibly hard to try and understand and relate to. But for those of us born in the 50s and 60s we can remember the streets of London littered with bomb sites and wreckage.
I would describe the book as:
"Post Apocalyptic Humour At Its Best".
It's all wrapped up in the paranoia, suspicion, courage and resolve of those who experienced the Second World War, a tribute to an age few of us alive today know first-hand.
It reminds us that though time is a healer, those thoughts and messages we now have the liberty to find amusing, were once a very real and serious message for a country who believed their world could turn upside down at any moment.
Over 260 pages with illustrations and a real survival messages written in a funny and amusing manner that rolls along with the main character, a certain Mr Jack Jones.
Jack is a likeable, crafty cockney type, making his own way out of a sticky situation, only to find that he has to draw on his own survival skills with every unsavoury character he meets.
A definite good read for any prepper or anyone interested in survival.
foreword by cody lundin

Cody Lundin
To add even more kudos to an already good book and from a prepping and survival viewpoint, the book has been read, vetted and endorsed by one of the worlds foremost survival experts, Cody Lundin.
Cody is an internationally recognised professional survival instructor with more than 29 years of hands-on teaching experience.
He has consulted for National Geographic, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the United States Forest Service, and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), among others.
Published by BLKDOG Publishing, you can buy it here: Citizen Survivor's Handbook

My Thoughts:
There's plenty to keep you amused and entertained in this book.
But it does have an underlying message on survival, with prepping being the message that carries it through.
It teaches you things you must know and do in order to survive.

In this review I will be testing the Bahco Folding Saw Laplander - a well designed lightweight folding saw.
It is made in Sweden and, of course, uses a good quality steel with a super sharp edge and from many of the other write-ups I have seen, is considered to be right up there at the top of the class for folding saws.
First impressions of the Bahco Laplander Folding Saw are its weight – at only 6.4oz you barely know you have it in your hands – I like this a lot as I find having to fight with a heavy saw just doubles the effort.

The cut and design of the teeth literally double the cutting stroke each pass, as the teeth will cut using both the pushing and pulling stroke, combined with a very aggressive tooth design it made cutting timber a very easy job, requiring very little effort.

The actual cutting teeth are super sharp and as they face both ways so you have to be very careful when cleaning the blade off.
You cannot simply run your hand down the blade like a normal saw to clear it.
All the teeth are hardened and coated to help reduce friction and prevent corrosion - so another nice touch.
In the closed position the Bahco measures 9 inches and when full open is 16 inches, with the actual cutting blade measuring 8 inches - which I found to be a very nice, comfortable size. [7 tpi]

I quite like the feel of the handle - it's like a rubbery plastic called 'Stanoprene' over a solid plastic frame which give a nice feel and lots of traction- even with wet hands I found it quite hard to slip off.

With such a sharp blade Bahco have added a safety lock to ensure it can't be accidentally opened and keeps the blade tucked away nicely - good idea I think...
Conclusions:
As you will see in my video review, the Bahco makes cutting timber into nice, usable pieces a very easy job - in fact, I think this saw is a lot faster than most other methods and gives you a cleaner cut.
For more in information, reviews and prices please click here for the Bahco Laplander Folding Saw 396LAP

This saw has got to be up there as one of the best folding saws in its class and performed every task I asked of it with minimum effort, every time.
The Laplander is now a permanent part of my bug out kit and will certainly be coming with me on every camp trip and, to be honest, it is only really restricted by the length of the blade.

From the very first beginning man looked at nature to provide everything he needed for survival.
They considered plants to have a somewhat magical power, possessing healing powers and the ability to cure anything from aches and pains, to severe illness.
These medicinal plants became the mainstay of their survival.
But what are the best natural herbs and plants for medicine to ward off illness?

In a disaster or SHTF situation, mainstream, over the counter medication will not be available. Except, of course, if your a politician, member of the royal family or their cronies.
For the rest of us it will be go fend for yourselves.....
People will have to turn to more traditional, old fashioned methods and look to nature again.
Therefore people will to alternative ways to alleviate health issues: stocking up with books on herbal medication is a must.
Right off the bat I want to recommend two books to you. They are called Hedgerow Medicine: Harvest and Make Your Own Herbal Remedies, by Julie Bruton-Seal, and the other is Dian Dincin Buchman’s Herbal Medicine: The Natural Way to Get Well and Stay Well
I have based parts of this article on Julie's and Dian's herbal remedies.

Cayenne pepper is traditionally known as powerful stimulant, it can produce a sense of warmth and heat within the stomach, and a general glow over the body without a inducing a narcotic or adverse effect.
A few grains placed in hot tea will help to calm a sluggish digestion and also flatulence.
If use in its ground up form [*finely ground]. It is also great to add to your first aid kit as an emergency means to stop bleeding.
It can be bought, already finely ground, from health shops or online via Amazon: [see details here - Cayenne Pepper] and is priced at around £5 for a large 500grm pack and I have found this is by far the best way to get it.

I also have another separate article on the wonders of stinging nettles. Considered a 'superfood' which is well worth a read.
You can find it here:
Natures Super Food - How To Make Stinging Nettle Tea

These ten plants are able to ease many health conditions and ailments, they are also able to ease painful conditions where nothing else is available.
So when you are gearing up and buying your seeds for a survival garden, it is important that you don't forget to purchase medicinal herbs.
Health is vital in a SHTF situation and you must keep your body as strong as possible from viruses, colds and flu.
These organic healing medicines will help your overall long term survival and in an extreme emergency assist in saving their lives.

As a prepper you will have acquired the odd survival knife or two, also a multi tool and probably a Swiss Army Knife as well - am I right.?!
When you bought them, there were nice and sharp and ready for action. and you make shaving sharp and fine tuned them by giving them the once over by touching up the blade with a fine whetstone and a stope and now they are perfect and razor sharp.
But when you use your knives they will slowly become blunt and that nice fine edge will require a bit of TLC - so back to the workbench and out with the grinding stone and whetstone once again.
The problem comes when your knife becomes blunt and doesn't perform as you want it to and you're out in the wild.

Knife sharpening is a skill in itself, even when you are working at the bench in perfect conditions, but out in the field its a different matter, so knowing how to sharpen knives the easy way is an essential part of prepping and survival.
Carrying a whetstone and a small stop is always good practice and I actually have a small kit that I carry with me in my rucksack.
But, what about a quick sharpen, or an emergency re-sharpen of your knife? Just to ensure that your blunt knife is able to cut properly in this type of situation?
It's actually not that difficult to re-sharpen your knife and get that nice sharp blade back again, wherever you are, and in this article 'how to sharpen knives the easy way', I'm going to show a quick, 'non faffing' way to go just that

Now to be honest I'm not one who goes for gear that is endorsed by TV celebrities.
We all know that their sole reason for the endorsement is to make them money. But thats life!
If someone offered me tens of thousands just to say 'use this it's good' then I probably would!
But good, bad or down right phoney celebrity, it's the product that matters.
It'll soon prove itself to be useless or not...
All that said, this is one of my favourite 'emergency' knife sharpening tools that I carry with me all the time.
It is extremely compact. robust and light, making it the perfect tool for my bug out bag.
Here's my video review of the Gerber Field Sharpener:
| Video review of the Gerber knife sharpener | ||

As you can see from my short video, this is an excellent tool to carry with you and I highly recommend you buy one for you bug out bag as part of your survival kit.

Carrying an offensive weapon in the UK is taken very seriously by our police and judges – so much so that most “weapons” are considered as illegal to carry.
Likewise, UK laws regarding self defence are quite strict for any member of the general public as well as for a UK Prepper.
Our means of defence is practically non existent and extremely limited in the UK, most would say too limited, with not enough protection available for the average citizen...
First Golden Rules Of Self Defence:
Firstly, when it comes to self defence you are allowed, by law, to use reasonable force proportional to the threat, or perceived threat, against you.
Simply put, if you think your going to be attacked or are actually being attacked you have a perfect right to defend yourself.

Are you aware of what's happening around you?
Furthermore, if you have excised proper situation awareness, and you anticipate an attack, then there's one thing you can use to gain advantage,
That is the use of a UK legal version of 'pepper spray' - this spray deterrent comes within that law.
Of course, there are several other forms of self defence sprays available – namely, Maze or Pepper Spray being the main two alternatives.
However, both contain dangerous noxious gas and this is considered illegal in the UK.
It also comes under the UK firearms law and is in the same category as a firearm, so we can't use it...
The only real LEGAL PEPPER SPRAY ALTERNATIVE FOR THE UK that we have as an good, effective equivalent to the 'real' Pepper Spray found abroad and used by our police is the Farb Gel Criminal Identifier.

This Spray Container a very discreet size, measuring only 85mm x 34mm and is capable of packing a punch that is capable of stopping a mugger or attacker in his tracks.
When it is sprayed at the face it will completely disorientate the attacker.

The natural instinct is to back off - when it is sprayed at the eyes it will cause blurred vision, this makes any attack even more difficult.
I have tested this legal pepper spray on myself - I can assure you it was not exactly a pleasant procedure!
I found it wasn't possible to do anything much other than attempt to cover up and protect myself and my face from the spray. (see my review video below)
The next thing I found was, the natural instinct is to try and wipe it off - trust me, this makes things a lot worse.!
Just imagine the panic factor you have just instilled into an attacker when he looks down and sees he has blood red hands after you have just sprayed him..!?
He will not of been expecting it and have no idea what might of just happened, and probably be more scared and ready to run off, than you !

The red spray will remain on the attackers skin and clothing for up to 7 days [in fact I landed up throwing the tee shirt away as it was a pain trying to wash the red dye out!].
The staying power of the spray dye makes the police very aware of the potential attacker and easier to track down
This spray has been specifically designed to meet all of the UK legal requirements and is totally legal to carry here.
I feel it is definitely a 'must have' item and without doubt, one of the best parts is the red coloured gel remains on the attacker, therefore making them instantly recognizable to the police and as a potential threat.
I like this Legal Pepper Spray for the UK very much and have made quite sure I have several for my family to carry - especially as they are both cheap and effective, and completely legal to carry.
One important thing to consider:
It will not drop an attacker or render him useless, rolling around on the floor in agony. There is nothing we can legally use that will do that!
BUT, what is does do is give is precious seconds to make an escape while he temporally blinded, disorientated and unable to see you.
If he cant see you, he cant attack you!

Here's some of the latest figures and statistics from the governments own information website, The Office of National Statistics, For some more information on this, see my article - self defence in the UK
I have found out a couple of legal points regarding the Farb Gel Spray - please read before you buy:
Generally as an Alternative UK Legal Pepper Spray for self defence this product ticks all the boxes and is something to consider for all the family, especially as it is effective and easy to use.
But, the best of all, it works AND it's very cheap...

There are many drinking water myths and wives tales about finding and drinking water in a survival or disaster situation.
By following these old tales you could easily land up in a worse condition than when you started…They could even lead to severe illness and even death.
Below is the most commonly found myths about how, when and where you can drink water.

When you consider that snow is very ice cold, it then makes sense that it will require lots of energy calories to warm it for proper digestion when in your stomach. By eating ice cold snow, you are cooling your core body temperature – this can lead to hypothermia.
As snow lays on the ground it will collect a lot of different types of bacteria and other organisms – this bacteria and organisms can easily make you ill.
Always melt snow or ice before ingesting and definitely stay away from snow that is discoloured, e.g. yellow snow.If you melt snow first it can then be boiled and purified.

In a word... NO, never drink seawater.
Sea water will increase your bodies dehydration level and will kill you very quickly indeed.
In fact, drinking sea water will cause death even faster than having nothing to drink in the first place.
In excessive heat, you can use salt water to help cool your body down, but never drink it.

This is rarely true…. on the odd occasion a fresh glacier stream may be clean but not always.
Remember, you don’t know where that stream has been before you met it!You have no idea what it passed over or what it came in contact with along it’s merry path to you either.
There could be animal waste, even dead birds or large animals laying in the upstream.
Essentially, if you have to make a choice between still or running water, the running water has less chance of being contaminated – but always try to filter the water, even if it’s just through a cloth or bandanna, anything will help to try and purify it a bit more.

Well, technically it’s a yes, BUT very, very small amounts.
Remember, urine contains all your bodies toxins – of which, most are extremely toxic and considered dangerous to your body in the first place.
Even small amounts should only be considered in the most extreme circumstances.
Urine will not rehydrate you – you are only using the bodies waste to try and rehydrate, by doing this will slow your bodies natural functions and this process actually uses more body fluid to process..!

Ha ha… yeah right. Of course you shouldn’t drink from a pond or puddle.
The same rules apply here as with all of the above. You have no idea what’s been in that water before you – it could even be a sewerage run off!
Always try to treat and purify the water before ever drinking it.
Always stop and think first before drinking from an unknown water source – and definitely treat and purify the water first.

If you know of any other strange drinking water myths and wives tales – let me know, contact is right down the bottom of the page…

Bug out or bug can be a problem to able bodied preppers, but How Do You Care For Elderly Relatives when the SHTF. What if they are ill or have dementia? Or maybe they are very weak and physically unable?

The process of making the right decision could turn out to be something that effects your whole bug out plan.
Planning is the key to all successful prepping and taking care of your elderly relative who may be weak or suffer from dementia makes planning even more important.
How do you do it? How do you ensure that everyone gets a fair chance of survival?

It's all well and good bugging out when your fit and healthy, but try it when your physically worn out, ill or suffering from mental issues.
It would be a very different story then.
It is incredibly difficult to put yourself in their shoes and try to imagine what they are going through, especially with mental issues like dementia.
Do you even know the various mental conditions that commonly exist with the older generation, conditions like what is Dementia or Alzheimers?
Two nasty little age related conditions that will add stress to an already tense situation.
Nothing will set you up for failure like failing to plan. So having a good all round plan of action for your elderly relatives is an essential part of surviving a bug in or bugging out scenario.
Make provisions for who will do what, and if your elderly relatives has experience and can contribute to the overall plan, then definitely include them.
It is far better for them to contribute and feel that they are part of the 'team' as you will focus their mind on doing something for the group.
The tasks may be very straightforward and quite simple, but they will be adding something to everyone's overall survival, plus giving them a sense of worth within the group.

Another very important point to remember is the fact that many of our elderly generation have been through very hard times before.
Veterans of the world war and the London blitz survived the very hard times that a bug out would be like.
They have experience, skills and knowledge having already gone through a SHTF situation for years on end.
Try to use this knowledge for the benefit of your whole bugging out plan.

Do not disregard you elderly folks, they could well be your means to survival.
If they do have issues, then work around them, and learn about those issues and how to best cope.
I have found a good resource for elderly mental issues here: Care For Elderly Citizens.
Steve Hart - UK Preppers Guide

"There are some simple facts that preppers seem to block out from their overall plan.
Ignoring these facts is a road to sure fire problems in the future".
Most of us have the bases covered when it comes to basic survival. we have food and water supplies, a means to cook food, and a means to keep warm during the winter months.
Some basic sanitation and medication, as well as preparations for the more nasty disaster effects like fallout and contamination.
But very few of us have enough..

Squirrelling away food supplies is actually one of the easiest parts of prepping for a disaster or SHTF situation.
We can all do that with relative ease, requiring no skills at all other than checking the use-by date and storing correctly.
Even if you only have limited storage space you can still amass quite a reasonable amount of stored foods, easily enough for a couple of months.
This, in itself, may be enough to see you through a disaster and keep you alive until a form of normality resumes.
Prepping for short term disaster is very important, and as research shows us: Surviving the first 30 days of a disaster, give you a 90% better chance of overall survival.

Short term water storage is pretty much a gimme, and one months supply is well within every preppers grasp.
But, as storing water uses so much space, most people will be looking toward using a safe and reliable method of water filter to be able to clean any old dirty water that's available.

This is where things get a little more difficult for your average prepper.
Most medicines have a very short shelf life, and, it is very difficult to get your hands on a long term supply.
The most I have managed is a three month supply, and that was by telling my doctor I was going away for an extended holiday.
Over the counter medicines are essential items to stock up and store, and fortunately they do not take up much space.
Even more essential are anti-biotics - these will be in very high demand, but are also very difficult to get over the counter.
There is an way to getting your hands on a decent supply, and your pet shop will provide the answer...!
It is guaranteed that the above, top three essential life saving supplies will run out quickly. Then what do you do?
Your food supply will only last as long as you can manage it - do you only eat half rations, expecting the disaster to go on longer. Or do you merrily chomp away through your supply as if nothing matters?
Regardless of your strategy, it will run out at some point - then what do you do? This leaves the question, is prepping good enough to survive a SHTF disaster?
Well, the answer is simple - No of course its not.
Prepping alone cannot sustain your long term survival, you must have other means.
There is an old saying - "All the gear, no idea". This has never been more correct when applied to prepping for a SHTF disaster scenario.
We are so hung up on having kit, that we lose track of of the real needs in a survival situation.

Simple skills like how to light a fire in wet conditions. If all your 'special' fire lighting kit has been used up, lost or stolen, what you going to do?
Do you have that skill to produce a fire from natural materials, especially if your someone who has made the decision to bug out and escape to the countryside, away from the masses?
Essentially you don't even need any fancy fire lighting kit, just the knowledge of the various methods used in the wild.
Hunkering down in your home is always a good starting point, and to my way of thinking, one of the best and safest solutions to a SHTF situation.
You home is familiar and your safety bubble, and while everyone else is panicking, trying to find food, water and medication, you are operating comfortably below their radar.

In your own home you have everything you need to survive that SHTF disaster, and depending on how much you have prepared, will generally determine how long you can survive.
The limiting factor is your safety, as before long there will conditions that mean making the decision to bugout may become a very real one.
The problem with bugging out is the fact that you will be making yourself a homeless refugee, and possibly putting yourself in a worse situation than before...
Now you have no choice but to bug out, live rough and live off your wits. This is where the whole idea of 'all the gear, no idea' comes from. If your hoping to just 'wing it', then in real honesty, your not going to last five minutes.

You have to learn bushcraft and survival skills along with your normal prepping routine.
Ask yourself this question:
With limited equipment, could you keep yourself safe, and survive if you really had to bugout?
I'm sure you'd say yes. You could stay safe and survive - but for how long?
You can only carry so much, and once that's gone, then what?

You simply must learn bushcraft skills to ensure long term survival.
Learn how to hunt, to fish and to safely cook your food. Learn about wild edibles and foraging.
Go out and do some hiking, and see how long you can stay out. Test yourself and see what you can actually do...!

An interesting article, designed to make you think.
Thinking longer term will make you reconsider what skills you need to catch up on.
Steve Hart

Gun ownership is considered to be a privilege rather than a right and the control of firearms in the UK are definitely one of the more closely monitored and toughest in the world.
As a direct result of these UK Gun Laws the amount of firearm offences make up less than 0.2% of recorded crime here in the United Kingdom.
The state considers any firearm as a dangerous weapon and, as such, has a duty to protect the public from its misuse - based on this duty to the British public the firearms licensing law was created.

A firearm is a term given to a lethal barrelled weapon.
That weapon can be of any description from which any shot, bullet or missile can be discharged, and knowing what the UK gun laws are will greatly help you in choosing the right license to obtain.
* There is one small area where the firearms licensing law does not apply and that is air rifles or pistols.
You can legally own an air rifle which has a muzzle energy of below 12 ft lbs or a pistol below 6 ft lbs without a FAC ( fire arms certificate ) Any air rifle above this will require licensing - A pistol above 6 ft lbs is completely prohibited. see choosing an air rifle for preppers.

Any member of the public can legally own a firearm in the UK provided they meet the requirements within the firearm licensing law.
A Firearm license gives you permission to:
That permission will only be granted to you, once fully assessed by the licensing authority, namely, the police, as [1] not posing a threat to public safety & [2] having good reason to own a firearm.
A typical 'good reason' would be target shooting club, museums or firearms dealer. In order for the police to decide if you are fit to own a firearm they will carry out a number of specific checks on yourself and associates, as well as quite a few other 'checks' which will include interviews, a visit to your home, in depth criminal record searches as well as require references from friends. Your GP may well be contacted as well.
Basically, anyone or anything that might give reason for the police to see you as unfit to own a firearm.
You must be legitimate in your application and be able to demonstrate a genuine reason for actually wanting to own a firearm. Typical, legitimate reasons for owning a firearm on a regular basis may be:
Each case is judged on its own merits and an individual basis
A firearm or shotgun certificate is valid for five years.

Many people get very confused when it comes to what you can or cannot legally own in the UK.
There are currently some 170,000 firearms licences and around 620,000 shotgun licences on issue here in the UK today. The vast majority of these licence holders are quite legitimate and extremely responsible with the use of their firearms at work and for their leisure pursuits.
It's only a very extremely small minority of individual cases where a legally held firearms is seen to be misused.
As a UK citizen you have a perfect right to own a firearm providing you prove yourself worthy of the Fire Arms Certificate - it's a simple as that.
You'd probably be surprised how many and what type of firearms you can actually own.!

Undoubtably The Best
Bushcraft Show In The UK.
The very 1st Wilderness Gathering took place in 2003 at The Bison Centre, West Knoyle in Wiltshire, and every year the show gets bigger and better,
Over the years I have seen this event grow from a small event in one field with some traders and schools sharing Bushcraft skills and knowledge, to a festival of wilderness living skills encompassing Bushcraft, survival and woodland crafts, and, of course, prepping.
The show has grown into an event with something for all the family with stories and music by the campfire in the evenings and skills workshops and activities throughout the five whole days of the festival.
If you've never been to the Gathering before and you love nature and the outdoors, then we have the family show for you:
Wilderness Gathering, a unique Bushcraft event, is the longest running and still the original festival of bushcraft, survival and primitive living skills.
The Gathering has become a social event and brings together families and friends, all those interested in Bushcraft and Wilderness living skills to enjoy a weekend of knowledge sharing in a relaxed and family friendly atmosphere
The show has Bushcraft clubs for all age groups of children to get involved in plus more activities for all including den building and wilderness skills classes for all ages.
There are hands on demonstrations of game preparation, knife sharpening, basha boat building, archery and axe throwing and primitive fire lighting to name just a few.
All of these skills are there for everybody and anybody to participate in.
All the younger children are hugely catered for at the show with their own bushcraft section for under and over 10's.
The "Coyote" & "Coyote Kids" can join in with a full program of bushcraft and survival related skills and activities.
I was very proud to be included with the instructors and work with the Coyote Kids activities last year in 2017 - and I'm very much looking forward to joining the team again this year.
Children's events range from Nature detectives, tracks and signs - Woodlife Trails for the Coyote Kids right up to Pine Resin & mounting Arrowheads for the older Coyotes.

For the rest of us adults there's an amazing amount of bushcraft and survival skills going on each day to keep even the most hardened bushcrafter or survival enthusiast busy all day long.
You really do learn so much at this show, and it's no wonder, with expert demonstrations, lectures and hands on skills from some of the foremost experts who are always happy to help and impart their knowledge to everyone.
For preppers, bushcraft gives us a firm grounding on which to base our prepping tactics, and prepping for when the SHTF, and we are not missed out either.
Lectures from renowned prepper, Tom Linden, on why everyone should prep are free for everyone to attend.
Just about all aspects of bushcraft and wild survival are covered by the many instructors at the show.
An amazingly friendly bunch of talented men and women.
I find, every year, I learn something new that can be applied to my prepping skillset, and I'm sure you will too.

If you want to learn real survival skills, from real experts, then this really is the show for you..
See you all there folks.....

The Wilderness Gathering is, without a shadow of doubt, the most absorbing show on the 2018 Bushcraft & Survival calendar.
I have been going for many years now and it just gets better and better with so much to do - especially for the children.
It is not just some money making event wrapped up with a bushcraft logo - it's the real deal.
Highly skilled and talented experts willing to impart their knowledge freely.
I don't think there's any other event where so many talented bushcrafters are together at one time.
Bushcraft (and prepping) is all about us adults learning more skills, and teaching and passing on our knowledge to our children and young people, as well as sharing to everyone who wants to learn new skills.
If you only go to one show this year - then this is the one, and if you see me around, say hello.
I hope to see you there.

This is the X7R Marauder, made by high end manufacturer, Olight, and in this review I try out this 'coke can' sized torch to see if it's worth adding to my prepping gear.
Firstly, this is not a torch for the faint of heart!
It packs some serious power - enough to turn night into day and light up just about everything in its path.
Standard Olight functionality make this a dream to operate, very easy and very straightforward as you work through the different modes.

Here's a short list of the basic X7R specifications:

Weighing in at 665 grams and approximately the same size of an iPhone6s long, this feels like a really solid bit of kit.
It means business and during my test, out performed my expectations.
The X7R has a host of nifty little features that make this a very desirable, high end torch.
On/Off lock, motion detection and battery condition are shown here, and indicated by a really cleaver cats eye indicator that double up as your main mode switch.

Unlike most previous Olight torches I have owned, the X7R has a completely sealed battery compartment, meaning it is not accessible unless you decide to dismantle the whole torch (something I do not recommend!).
Instead there is a really fast, 3x faster USB Type-C charging port in the tail end.
You access this by turning the waterproof end cowl ring.

I found that charging was, in fact, very fast, although it did take a lot of power out of my charge bank when I recharged out in the forest away from mains power.
Not necessarily a problem, but worth considering.

The X7R runs on four of the 3000mAh 18650 rechargeable batteries, which are sealed inside the case. You can see now why it uses a lot of my charge bank power when recharging....
But by sealing everything into the casing you get an IPX7 waterproof rating - the IPX7 means you can submerse the torch into water upto a depth of one meter without and water ingress or failure.
So using the torch in the rain or with wet hands presents no problem at all.
All in all I found the X7R to be quite exceptional, and the performance was beyond my expectations.
So what do you think?
I have tried to cover all aspects of this torch and as you can see, the performance is exceptional, and it really does turn night into day.
