Food Procurement For Survival
How To Make A
Windlass Animal Trap For Prepping And Survival

DISCLAIMER:
It is illegal to hunt with this sort of trap in the UK. DO NOT DO IT.
I only practice my skills at setting up various types, and then fully dismantle the trap, leaving no trace.

Prepping is all about survival, and survival in the wilds mean learning bushcraft skills to keep you alive.
* Although you cannot leave a trap like this unattended, or hunt animals using this type of trap here in the UK, you can still practice the making and setup of traps.
* On private land where there is a vermin problem (normally farms) it may be possible to get a permission to rid vermin from certain areas.

Trapping For Food

One of the top priorities for survival in a bugout situation is going to be food procurement, and you need to know as many ways to get a meal on your table as possible. This is essential to all us preppers.

As with all types of hunting animals for food, there are a few fundamentals that must be followed even before you can consider setting an animal trap and catching your dinner.

In my opinion you either get animals that are real smart or just plain stupid! Not much else in-between.

To some extent, the stupid ones are fish and rabbits, with fish spending most of the time looking for food and latching onto just about anything that moves underwater, and rabbits.
Rabbits are real daft and will quite happily sit up, nice and still and pretty much let you shoot them!

But even these daft animals can sense a predator, and especially a human predator.
So precautions have to be made when it comes to making, handling and setting traps.
You must ensure as little as posible of your human scent gets onto the trapping materials, and the surrounding area where you place the trap.
This is an art in itself, and leaving no scent of a human and leaving no trace that you have even been there is very difficult to achieve.

Location Of Traps And Snares

Good positioning of snares and traps will greatly increase your chances of catching dinner, and by looking for animal highways and short cuts, you can build up an idea of the day to day route that animal takes whilst out looking for food.

Remember, most of an animals time is concentrated around looking for food, and generally they will take whatever opportunity to get some if it presents itself to them.

So your job is to find their most popular, active route and provide them with an incentive to check out the food (bait) you have conveniently left for them, and hopefully they will oblige and walk straight into your trap.

Making A Killer Blow

As with all types of animal hunting for food, we aim for a very quick, clean kill that's fast, instant and as humane as possible, and the windlass trap is one of those fast methods if the entry into the trap, and trap itself are set out correctly.

If an animal is not dispatched fast, it will struggle and panic. This panic reaction is similar to human response which cause a massive amount of adrenaline and hormones to be released into the animals body.
This goes straight to the muscle to aid escape - the muscle meat is exactly what we want as our food, and these huge amounts of adrenaline can easily taint the meat, giving a very unpleasant flavour.

How To Make A
Windless Animal Trap
For Prepping And Survival

Even a small windlass trap can impart tremendous energy and force at a high speed, directed to an exact kill point within the trap if set and tested properly.
Dispatching the animal by 'blunt force trauma', the mechanism will release a 'hammer' type blow killing the game instantly.

Below Are The Principles Of A Windlass Animal Trap

Once you have decided on a good area to set the trap you have two options:
1/ Use two flexible saplings and set the trap between them
or
2/ Set two posts deep in the ground

1/  Between Two Trees

Here you can see that I use two solid trees to bind my cordage around.
These have to have flex in them, so therefore saplings make a hood choice as they will 'give' with the force when you wind the windlass up in tension.

2/  Between Two Posts

Using tow posts means you can set the trap where you want it along a trail.

The posts need to be thick enough and strong enough to take the tension and give a little, but also a bracing bar is fixed to the bottom to stop any movement at ground level.
The bracing bar should have a notch each end to ensure it doesn't slip out.

From this point on the setting up principles are the same:

Setting The Batton

Wind your cord around the two posts several times and tie off.
This doesn't need to be tight.

Position the batton in between and the posts and twist around the cord until your happy with the tension, then wind back one turn and put a safety rod across to stop accidental triggering.

Form The Basic Trigger Mechanism

There are several different types of trigger that can be used for this trap, but I prefer this type shown here.

Bait up the trigger at this point.
Setting this triggers requires a few attempts and practice to get right.!

Finish Position For The Windlass Trap

This is the final set position for the windlass animal trap.

In order to prevent the animal approaching for any direction, it is important to guide the animal toward the front of the trigger in order to ensure a clean kill.

Final set up.

With the trap and guide path in place the animal can only approach from one direction and will take the bait head on.

This will give a blunt force hit directly to the head or neck area resulting in an instant kill.

A Scaleable Animal Trap

The windlass is completely able to be scaled up or down depending on the size of animal you are hunting. As the animal reaches forward with its mouth in order to eat the bait, it will be in the perfect position for a direct hit from the batton.

The bait should be set just above the animals head height to get the trigger to activate correctly.

Steve Hart UK Prepper

Trapping is a bushcraft art in itself, and takes years to perfect, but as preppers it is well worth trying to learn these skills, and go out and practice them in the woods.

In a SHTF situation they could be one of your only ways to procure food.

When you practice your trap making:  ALWAYS DISMANTLE THEM and leave no trace when you have finished.

Natures Super Food
How To Make Stinging Nettle Tea

How do you make natures own superfood, a nice cup of stinging nettle tea.

In this article I want to cover the advantages and benefits of drinking stinging nettle tea and how to make this nettle tea when you're out in the woods.

The herbal drink itself is very refreshing and typically herbal in taste and texture. If you're at home, you can actually put it in the fridge and sip it throughout the day for a cool refreshing drink.

In my video (end of article), you can see the process from start to finish:

benefits of nettle tea

1: Aids your Heart Health

Along with high levels of vitamin D and K, nettles are stuffed to the brim with other essential vitamins and minerals, which are considered potent heart protectors.
Nettles are high in vitamins A and C, Betacarotene and other Carotenoids. High concentration of iron and vitamin C, both of which contribute to helping your body boost red blood cell production. May also help to reduce anaemia.

Stinging nettles also contain flavonoids, namely Quercetin and Kaempferol, both of which have been shown to lower blood pressure and thus reduce risk of cardiovascular disease.

Similarly, with it's high levels of  iron and potassium, tea infusions made from stinging nettles can help the blood vessels to relax, giving rise to healthy circulation.

2: It Will Soothe Allergies

The stinging nettle plant, while in it's natural state, will stimulate your bodies natural allergic reaction.

The fine hairs, known as trichomes just have to brush against skin and this reaction will start.
But when you make nettle tea, they do the opposite and begin to help soothe and relieve allergies.

3: helps muscle joint pain and strengthens bones

Nettles have natural analgesic, anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties.
It is widely known that they were used by our ancestors to treat muscular and joint problems like muscle stiffness, aches and soreness.

Furthermore, studies have been made that show that stewed nettles helped greatly in relieving arthritis pain and relieved the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Additionally there are very high amounts of vitamin D and K, Calcium, Magnesium, and Iron found in nettle infused tea, which protect bone density.

4: Reduces and Calms Skin Irritations

Although this may seem to be the opposite of peoples general opinion, infused nettle tea has many natural antihistamine, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and pain-relieving abilities.

You can reduce the itching, redness and swelling that are found in skin conditions such as eczema and acne.
Likewise you can also speed up the healing process and minimise scarring.

Most noteworthy and to get the best results, you can drink infused stinging nettle tea.
Additionally if you prefer, make a cup of tea and then let it cool, and apply the cool liquid directly to the affected area of your skin.

5:. Helps To Increase Your Urinary, Kidney And Prostate Health

Stinging nettles are a natural diuretic and as such can aid in overall healthy urination. You can therefore use the humble stinging nettle plant as a natural remedy for urinary tract infections and additionally, prevent kidney stones.

6: Helps to Increase immune function

There are several compounds found in stinging nettles that give the immune system a boost.

The Antioxidants, Flavonoids, Carotenoids and the vitamins A and C help protect immune cells against damage that can weaken the bodies immune function.

When you drink a stinging nettle infused drink, the nettle extract actually strengthens the bodies own immune response.

When to pick stinging nettles

You only have a limited time during the year when you can pick nettles, this being when when they are at there freshest and most potent.
For that reason look to harvest them from early spring through to summer.  For best results choose them while they’re still quite small, around a foot tall, you will find the leaves are at their most tender then.
If possible harvest them while they’re still young, this means before the plant starts flowering.  You'll find that once the nettle starts to flower the leaves become bitter.

Alternatives to picking your own stinging nettles

Seeing as you can only pick fresh nettles at certain times of the year, you can do one of two things:

1. Harvest a load of nettles and dry them for future use - this is a lot of effort, and to be honest not very efficient...
OR
2. Buy them ready picked and dried in bulk. This is what I do and is by far the best method. I have left a handy link below to the nettle tea that I use....

Made from nettle leaf, this rich and mellow tea is packed with minerals and nutrients.

  • The nettle tea suppliers we use make use of entirely organic leaf, ensuring a high quality tea with no hidden surprises
  • Nettle tea promotes greater health and wellbeing, improving your day-to-day quality of life.
  • Valley of Tea puts quality first, ensuring that all of our teas are carefully prepared and packaged for maximum freshness
  • A Word Of Warning - Common Sense Safety Precautions

There is a chance the stinging nettle infusions can have a severe effect with over-the-counter and medically prescribed medications, these include: drugs for high blood pressure, diabetes, diuretics, blood thinners and lithium.

As a result of this, it is well worth consulting your doctor before starting to use any new supplement or natural remedy.

As you can see, making yourself a nice cup of stinging nettle tea is really quite a simple process and the nutritional benefits are very high.

Although there are just a few months in the year where the nettles are at their best, you can always supplement your diet with shop bought nettles.

    * and finally, just so you know: I am not a doctor or medically trained. So please don't take this as medical advice.
Do your own research on stinging nettle tea.

    Happy prepping

Essential Knots For Bushcraft And Prepping

Firstly, some of the terms used in knots for bushcraft

These are the generally used terms for the various parts, you will need to know these before you begin to tie knots. They are pretty straightforward though.

    The Loop

    Cinching Up

    The Bight

    The Toggle

    The Working End

    The Standing End

Below are some of my favourite knots that I tend to use the most.  These knots can be used as stand alone fixings, or combined with other rope to form a more effective or stronger fixing.

It is essential to practice and learn your knots for prepping and survival purposes.  So the knots I use are the very simple ones..!  Which, I think are the most effective and easiest to master quickly.

    One thing to remember though:
There are several knots for bushcraft that are the exactly same, but they have different names and would not be known to someone else as this name even though it is identical.

This can differ from country to county, and in the UK, it can even differ from county to county.
I have even seen the same knot with a different name being used by different sports - i.e: Fishing, climbing, hiking etc.

However, below are the essential knots for bushcraft you should know, regardless of their names.

    Overhand Knot

As with all knots, I have found the best material to use for practice is paracord, this gives you inexpensive, but quality cordage.

A very simple, but effective knot that can be used to tie two separate pieces of cord/rope together to make a longer piece.

It is secure and can withstand high linear force.

It's also the ideal type of knot to use for securing smaller items:  For example, adding a lanyard to equipment that you want to attach to your belt, rucksack etc.

For a prepping and survival applications, this basic knot can be formed into a double overhand knot, (shown here) which can give a very useful loop, from which it can be added to your kit for many other securing uses.

As a very secure knot it has great uses where the forces are linear, and is well suited for climbing application as hook-on points shown here:

    Clove Hitch Knot

A self tightening knot that is perfect for going over or around and object like a tree trunk or a post.

This type of knot can be undone very easily, with minimal effort.

This knot is also ideal for securing one end of a tarp when making a shelter, when you want one fixed end that is not movable.

    Timber Hitch Knot

Quite a specific knot that is easy to undo, yet very simple and secure.
Again, a good one to learn for shelter with a tarp.

A very simple knot to create as it actually isn't really a knot.!
It is just a process of twists that hold against each other.

    Fishermans  Knot

This is an alternative to the reef knot, but considered stronger

It can take a lot of force in one direction if needed and is a good knot to use if climbing up or pulling/towing something along.

The knot can be improved by forming a 'double' fisherman knot show here:

best survival knots for preppers the fishermans knot

    Half Hitch  Knot

A very simple, basic knot similar to the overhand knot, however, it can be added too, making it a versatile knot for all sorts of shelter making.
The half hitch in itself is not particularly strong and can also be difficult to undo.

    Double Half Hitch  Knot

Doubling up with the loop will now make the half hitch a substantially stronger knot, biting into the cord and becoming very firm and secure.
Although very secure, it also makes it more difficult to undo.

    Half Hitch With Bight Knot

For ease of undoing the double half hitch, you can add a simple bight to the knot, now making this a strong knot but an easy knot to fully undo without any effort.

best survival knots for preppers the fishermans knot
best survival knots for preppers the fishermans knot

    Using Toggles With Knots

Using a toggle will greatly increase the safety of the knot and prevent it from accidentally undoing.

Normally a stick will be sufficient, so long as its not dead and crumbling.

Simply slide through the loop and cinch up to make it secure.

Half Hitch With Bight & Toggle Knot

A toggle is a simple addition to the 'bight loop' that makes it very difficult for the bight section of the knot to come undone.

    Ratchet Knot With Toggle

Good, secure method for securing around an object like a tree trunk for the fixed end to a tarp. Staring with a 'looped' overhand knot and using a toggle the knot is easily undone.

best survival knots for preppers the fishermans knot
best survival knots for preppers the fishermans knot

    Quick Release Knot

Highly efficient and fast knot for securing around any object.
The process of this knot allows for additional tension to be put on the line and the quick release knot to secure in place.

The knot can be finished off with a toggle for extra security or even doubled up with a half hitch to lock solid in position.

best survival knots for preppers the fishermans knot

    Prusik Knot

A fiction knot that allows you to slide freely into position, yet under tension will lock up and not move.

Very useful knot for tarps, snares and anywhere you need adjustment of one piece of equipment against another.

A prusik knot can be single, double or any amount you decide for your purpose.

With this type of knot it is possible to climb a single rope with a loop over each foot. It will only move when pressure is released from the knot allowing your foot to move up.

An easy knot but very handy one to learn for prepping.

As you can see, these type of knots for bushcraft make prepping life a lot easier when you know a few of the essential ones.

You don't need many - just the essentials.  These will get you out of trouble and ensure everything stays nice and tight when you want it to.!

The good thing about knowing how to tie a good knot, is the fact that you can practice anywhere so long as you have a piece of cord.
If you really get good, you can progress to working with one hand only.

    Happy Prepping Folks,
    Steve

Solo Stove Lite Wood Burning Stove For Camping Or Bushcraft

There are so many cooking systems to choose from these days, and the choice of fuel source is slowly increasing, but do you really need to have a stove that needs you to carry additional fuel..?
In this review I shall be testing out the Solo Stove Lite with the additional 900ml cook pot. These wood burning stoves are a complete cook system that can use wood and many fuel sources and are ideal for camping or bushcraft.

    Fuel:

Pressurised gas canisters, gels and various liquids are very common and most work well. So we have a good choice to suit our needs and situation.

In prepping we try to eliminate as many of the 'what ifs' as possible, so having to carry a stock of fuel, that will potentially run out, can present us with a problem.

For those of you who have been out in the wilds for more than a week, it becomes obvious that carrying fuel is a real problem - just how much do you need?

    Natural Fuel:

Along with the quantity of fuel you need to carry, there's the issue of added weight in you rucksack - as always 'less is more' so eliminating the need to carry ANY fuel has got to be a big plus, in any situation.

The answer to this fuel problem is pretty straightforward and the easy solution is using the fuel source that's all around you, i.e: use natural materials, wood, cones, furns etc.

All these natural fuels will create heat to boil your water and enough heat to cook your food.

Of course, as always there are plenty of  wood burning stoves to choose from, and if you go right back they were very simple tin boxes with a hole to feed in some twigs.

But wood burning stoves design has moved on:

In this article I want to run through the new designs that make the new cooking stoves so much more efficient and better than before.

The stove I am using here is the Solo Stove Lite: Ultra Light Weight Backpacking Stove

Here's the principle behind the super efficient, smokeless Solo Stove:

As the hot air rises, it pulls air through the venting holes in the bottom the the stove.
This is helped by the absence of oxygen that has been created by the actual combustion process.

This introduction of new air not only fuels the fire at the base, but provides an extra boost of 'pre-heated' air through vent holes at the top of the burn chamber.

This type of stove design also has a double wall and makes the Solo Stove Lite a natural convection, inverted, down-gas, gasifier stove....!

To be honest, I don't know quite what all that means, but I do know it certainly works..

The extra burst of preheated oxygen that feeds back into the actual firebox area through the small holes at the top part of the stove cause a secondary combustion.
This secondary combustion phase now allows the fire to burn more fully and is the reason why there is very little smoke during full burn phase.

Whether your out practicing bushcraft skills, wild camping or practising some stealth camping for bug out, the very last thing you want is to be giving away exactly where you are.

Having a camp fire and not being able to control the smoke plume means you will be sending up smoke signals to everyone around for miles away.!

Look at me - I'm over here...!!!

The advantage to this secondary smokeless burn means a far more efficient burn cycle, which in turn means you'll be using a lot less wood compared to an open camp fire.

In effect these type of wood burning stoves don't just burn wood you feed into it -  It actually cooks the smoke out of the wood and then burns the smoke not once, but twice.!

Referring to the diagram, you can also see the the cooking ring on the top -  the angled lip also increases the stoves overall efficiency as it directs the heat towards your cooking pot, again this results in minimal heat loss.

Having the raised cooking ring also has the advantage of providing a windshield, but still allows oxygen to flow inward.

This system is one of the most efficient types of wood burning stoves you'll ever own.

Previously I have tested out the older styled camp cook stove, so I thought it about time I reviewed a newer, more fuel efficient cook system.

    Video Review:
Solo Stove Lite & Solo Pot 900ml for camping or bushcraft

This setup is very good as the stove will fit very nicely inside the pot, making the whole lot nice and compact.
Plus that combo only weighs 17oz.....[ 0.48kg ]

This particular Solo Stove I tested also comes with a 900 ml, stainless steel stove pot:

How to Find Water and Filter and Purify or Distill Using the Sun

Knowing how to purify water will save your life.

You may think that because you are miles from civilisation that any water source would be safe to drink but this is not the case.

After obtaining shelter, water is your next priority and regardless of your current supply, you should begin immediately securing a source.

In most cases, you will have to filter and purify any surface water source you find in a wilderness environment.

Surface water sources are contaminated by animal faeces, birds, insects and animal carcases and by humans as well. It's now essential that you know how to purify water.

    man drinking dirty water

The water source will contain harmful bacteria, parasites and pathogens that will cause illness or worse.
The water must be filtered and purified before it would be considered safe to drink.

Acceptable methods of emergency water purification include, chemical treatment using iodine or chlorine dioxide tablets, or sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine), by boiling the water or by using a portable water filtration system.

    The Basic 'Layer' Water Filter

Not only must you know how to purify water you must also learn how to filter it properly first.

Water must be filtered to remove waterborne cysts that can harbour and protect bacteria from chemical treatment or even boiling.

The cysts can be described as micro sized seedpods that can withstand high temperatures. Filtering will remove these cysts along with pesticides, herbicides, sediment, insects and other debris.

    basic water filter system

Filtering mediums include charcoal, sand, gravel, cloth, cheesecloth and coffee filters. Layer the filtering mediums with the finer material as the bottom layer to filter out the microorganisms.

Use any food can with a hole in the bottom, plastic soda bottle or any suitable device that did not contain chemicals or other toxins.

    water boiling over open fire

Next, pour the water into a vessel for boiling or into your container for chemical treatment.

Allow the water to rapid boil for one minute if at sea level and if you suspect you are above sea level boil for three minutes. Water boils at a lower temperature at higher elevations because of the reduced air pressure thus, the extended boil time.

Boiling longer than the recommended times will cause you to lose water volume through evaporation; this can be problematic if you have a limited source.
For every 152 meters / 500 feet above sea level, water's boiling point is reduced by one degree.

Before setting out on any outdoor adventure:
Make sure you know how to purify water before you find yourself in a survival situation.

    Finding Water

You now know how to purify water but before you can get started, you have to find water first.

You may not always have a river, stream, lake or pond next to your campsite in fact you may have to dig for it or collect it using other methods that will be described but first how to dig for water -

    forest with dry wash

Dry wash or shallow gullies can be a source of water, particularly if there is green vegetation along the sides.
These washes usually have water flowing at various times. In the dryer seasons, the flow diminishes or stops completely but there can be water just below the surface.

Note the green vegetation in this arid environment. The plant life could not survive on the rock outcropping unless there was a water source just below the surface.

You may find a natural spring is seeping through a fissure in the rocks and is filling up a small cistern. In years past people constructed cisterns to collect spring water, pooled water made is easier to collect.

Any water collected from a cistern must be purified; animals will use the source as well and will have contaminated it.

Transpiration simply means to lose water vapour.

    Solar Water Distillation and Transpiration

Plants lose water vapour through their epidermal pores or their stomata located on their leaves. Technically this a gas exchange in plants.

Plants absorb carbon dioxide and through transpiration exchange that gas for oxygen, which is present in the vapour they lose through their stomata.

Plastic bags a weight (small stone) for the bag and some string are needed to collect water using this method.

    solar transpiration using plastic bag

The vapour given off by the leaves will condense on the sides of the bag and drip toward the weight placed in the bag.
Clear plastic is ideal because it allows the sun's rays to strike the leaves.

This is a way to collect moisture from the soil using a solar water distiller. Materials needing are a digging tool, collection cup, sheet of clear plastic and a small rock for a weight.

Evaporated water is purified so you do not need to know how to purify water collected with this method.

    soar still

Dig out a small depression and make sure the plastic can cover it with plenty of overlap on the sides. Once excavated place a collection cup in the centre of the depression and fill the hole in with green vegetation.

Place the plastic over the top and secure along the sides with the excavated soil or rocks. Place the small rock over the collection cup that is under the plastic and put a small hole in the plastic over the cup. The weight creates a depression to allow water to flow toward the hole.

The sun will essentially "sweat" the moisture from the soil and vegetation. As the moisture evaporates, it will condense on the top side of the plastic and begin to flow toward the hole and begin dripping into the collection cup.

Portable Water Filtration - Where Prepping comes into its own.!

If you are able to prepare for a situation that requires raw untreated water to be filtered and left safe and sterile for drinking, then it is always advisable to carry a portable water filter in your backpack.

In fact you can also get a water filter drinking straw which will give you safe drinking water direct from a water source. [not sea water].

These other ‘instant safe drinking water filters’ offer safe, clean, drinkable water but without the hassle of all of the above methods.

Learning how to purify water is not complicated and the methods described are relatively easy to accomplish.

In some cases, you will have to be prepared by having certain materials with you or have the ability to find those materials in your environment.

Foraging can result in you finding what you need, such as discarded metal cans or other vessels to boil water in and discarded plastic shopping bags that can used to collect water from green vegetation

Knowing as many of the old bushcraft water filtering methods is essential for all preppers.
But we are in the 21st century folks..!

Modern water filters are the way to be fully prepared.
Don't get caught out - get prepared first.

    Happy Prepping Folks.

Three Simple Yet Effective Rain Water Harvesting Methods

Let’s face it, life is not perfect and in fact, at times it can be pretty harsh and cruel, and unfortunately, that means that disaster can potentially strike at any time.

These disasters in question could come in a variety of different forms, including: Natural disasters, terrorist attacks, pandemic, economical collapse, rioting and martial law, and much more beside.

As the saying goes “failing to prepare is preparing to fail” and in the event of an emergency or natural disaster of any kind, wouldn't you want to do all you can to ensure that you and your loved ones are well prepared and well looked after?

rain water harvesting methods in the wilderness

Water for example, is an extremely essential commodity that many of us take for granted.

In the event of a natural disaster, or even if you find yourself alone in the wild for that matter, you will need a sustainable supply of clean and fresh drinking water, which is where rain water harvesting methods come into the mix.

Here’s a look at three simple, yet highly effective rain water harvesting methods.

Old guttering, pipes, groundsheets or tarps -

It doesn't matter whether you're in an urban environment, out on the trail, in the wilderness, by the coast, or anywhere else for that matter, you will still need fresh drinking water as soon as you possibly can.

One of the simplest yet most effective rain water harvesting methods you could ever think of, is to basically use a stretched out tarp or some old guttering or pipes to harvest any rain water.

Basically you will set up old guttering or pipes close to your camp or where you've hunkered down, and will use them to collect the rain.

A top tip is to set them up in trees and bushes as the leaves and foliage will help to allow even more rain down your guttering system.

From here you basically angle the pipes into a storage container of some sort, and hey presto.

rain water harvesting methods tarp collection

    simple rain water harvesting methods

Collecting your water can be as simple as this!

Just some guttering and a catchment area, in this case, an old oil drum.

Obviously some good filtration would be needed after collection in order to ensure clean, safe drinking water, but for 'grey water' usage this method is perfectly fine.

Safe for flushing toilets and watering the garden.

    Catchment areas –

    rain water harveting methods

Basically, catchment areas are specially designed vessels which can be placed either on rooftops, or on the ground, that are used to catch and store rain water.

Many catchment areas on rooftops for example, will make use of guttering systems like we looked at previously, and will allow rain water to flow down the pipes and be collected in specially designed vessels.

    • With roof catchment areas however, you need to be wary of the roofing material in question.
For example, lead or metallic painted roofs are not recommended as they can leak contaminants into the rain water.

The standard water butt is your first choice and this one is probably one of the smallest size of catchment area for sensible rain water harvesting at 230L capacity.

However, this type of water butt only costs around £50 and represents good value for money.

Definitely more than one will be needed - ideally four butts coupled up together giving you just under a massive 1000 litres for £200 is well worth considering

See full range of water butts here.

With nearly double the capacity of the water butt above, this is a slimline, heavy duty catchment area giving you 525L of water storage.

The price you will pay is significantly higher though, at around £235. But you are getting a high grade product.

If space is a concern, then this type is worth looking at as it will sit close to a wall measuring, 1100cm high x 85cm wide x 65cm deep.

    Pre filtering and catchment -

Being able to capture your rain water easily is essential. A pre filter is also a good idea to have 'in-line' that intercepts any large debris or rodents!

You will still have to treat the water to get safe, drinkable water, but by adding the pre filter you can at least get rid of some of the big stuff.

This type of catchment method will attach to round or square downpipes and do the first stage filtering for you.

Not too expensive at around £30 but very effective at providing a directed water feed into your catchment water butts.

Basic collection and storage devices –

If you really find yourself away from civilisation and lacking resources, sometimes you may literally find yourself in a survival situation in which you will need to make do with whichever resources you can find.

In these events, basic storage and collection devices such as empty bottles or containers will work just fine and can actually provide you with a selection of pretty effective rain water harvesting methods.

If you are looking to use empty plastic bottles to store your water, it’s recommended that you use a knife or sharp implement, and remove the narrow top of the bottle to help open it up and increase the storage capacity.

By doing this, you make the opening larger and therefore allow more rain water to make its way inside.

If you have, or can find, multiple bottles or similar containers, set them up strategically and use leaves and foliage as a form of guttering system to allow more rain inside. The more you set up, the more rain water you’ll be able to harvest.

If you are harvesting rain water in this way, make sure that you secure your bottles firmly into the ground as the last thing you want is them falling over when they get too full, or being knocked over by animals perhaps.

Try digging a shallow hole and half burying the bottle and then firmly packing the soil around the edges to help hold your bottles firmly in place.

To get the most from any type of rain collection method
you have to try and catch as much rain as possible.

Just about anything will do - a tarp, sheet, raincoat, groundsheet, bin liner, plastic bag... Anything to give a larger catchment area.

So, by using as big a catchment area as you can find and then funnelling that rain water towards your containers will give very fast results.

    A 2,000 sq. ft roof is only 20' x 100', (6m x 30m) and if you have a pitched roof with two sides, it only has to be 20' x 50' (3m x 15m)

With only 1" (25mm) of rain you're going to be able to collect 1,250 gallons of water - that's over 5500 litres...!

If you have a house with no gutters to direct the rainfall, there's always different rain water harvesting methods that will work just as well.

Building your own system is one of them.

This wooden guttering trough makes perfect sense - especially as it can now be positioned anywhere in your back garden:

Never neglect straightforward survival methods - these rain water harvesting methods will definitely increase your chances of survival in a SHTF situation.

Don't get caught out - get prepared first.

    Happy Prepping Folks.

How To Choose A Good Survival Knife

Firstly, it is without doubt that a good survival knife will make it is very hard to survive any outdoor situation.

Your survival knife is undoubtedly the single most important item to have in your Bug Out Bag, your Emergency Kit and for Home.

So what are the important facts on how to choose a good survival knife and what do you really need to know in order to make the right decision for you and your circumstances.?

    feathering wood with a knife

What do you need your survival knife for:

Above all ask yourself where and how you intend to use you knife, make a list of scenarios that you foresee happening that are personal to yourself and your foreseen survival situation.

If you see a situation where you will be forced to bug out and leave your home with minimal previsions, then you must have knives that are capable of being used for both hunting and skinning.

Selecting a good survival knife can sometimes mean choosing to have several survival knives at your disposal.
In fact this is common prepper practice having several survival knives, each with the best qualities for you foreseen situation. Remember, your survival knife is one of your most important items in your bug out bag and survival kit.

Consequently, I would always say have more ham one knife. If you were to break or loos one, you always have a backup.
    Remember: One is none....

    Survival knife sizes:

Likewise size isn't everything – A big knife can be fine for splitting wood and chopping but a complete pain for fine work and completely useless for skinning.

A small knife can also cause problems when battoning wood and ineffective for personal protection.

Hence choosing the best survival knife must be based on how prepared you are for your particular survival scenario and your perceived situation and dangers.

    Survival knife design:

There are really only 5 main design areas when choosing a good survival knife –

    • Full or 3/4 tang blade
    • Serrated knife edge
    • Straight edge blade
    • Pointed tip blade
    • Comfortable grip
    • Sheath

    Full Tang Blade:

This refers to a survival knife with a fixed blade where the whole knife, blade and tang, are made from one piece of steel.

Big knives, like the Ka-Bar shown here need to be full tang to function properly.

A full tang will make your survival knife much more stronger and less likely to bend or snap, giving you more leverage.

    3/4 Tang Blade:

You can get knives with a tang that does not go the full length of the handle - these are known as 3/4 tang knives.

They are still strong but, for a survival knife I would always choose a full tang knife for peace of mind and the added strength.

    choose the best survival knife

    Serrated Edge Blade:

These offer a sawing option if needed and ideal for cutting rope or through small twigs of wood.

The Gerber knife shown here is a very solid knife.
Ignoring the fact that this knife is endorsed by Bear Grylls, it has the serrations to the lower 1/3 of the blade, specifically for rope or animal bone cutting.

The main problem with a serrated blade is the edge very difficult to sharpen. A straight blade can easily be sharpened with a sharpening stone, but serrated blades require a bit more attention.

Serrated blades are no good when hunting and skinning as they will rip the skin, but can help to cut tendon and bone if needed.
Definitely choose a straight blade if you intend to use your knife for more hunting related purposes.

    Straight Edge Blade:

A full length blade is usable.
Especially for fine work where you need to choke down on the knife.

The straight blade is ideal for wood splitting, carving, skinning and are the easiest knives to sharpen.

The Mora range of knives are a very good straight edge blades and well worth considering.

I have review article on their best knives here: Mora Knives Review

    Blade Thickness:

This is quite an important part of your survival knife and will effect its performance considerably if you choose badly.
Again, the general rule is, don’t buy cheap. The blade should never flex.

As a general rule most good knives have a blade thickness of 3/16″ – 1/4″ this give them the thickness to withstand impact when chopping wood and also prevents any flexing when levering.

You can, of course, go for a hand made, custom knife and something that's practically unbreakable.

The 'Titan Knife' by fellow prepper Tom Linden fits right into this category, with a custom design knife having a blade thickness of 8mm.

Blade material knive carbon V steel

There two main types of material used for a survival knife - Stainless steel and Carbon.

The choice is more personal preference than anything else really, however, a carbon blade will be expected to hold a good edge for longer than a stainless steel blade but will rust if left out or not cleaned off. The stainless blade is considered a pretty much indestructible but will require sharpening much more frequently.

     Pointed tip blade knife 11

This is much preferred over a curved blade as this can be lashed to a pole to give extended reach for a stabbing action [especially fishing and hunting]

Handle & Grip knife mora bushcraft handle

Grip is essential when using the knife for long periods and must feel comfortable in your hand, but this must also be strong and solid,  as you may need to use it for banging nails in or breaking glass or even as a 'non lethal  self defence weapon.

Grips come in various materials - wood, bone, hard or soft rubber, polymer etc.  But so long as your knife fits you comfortably is more personal choice.  *very important point - Avoid buying a hollow handled knife. -

I know there are plenty on the market and many by reputable manufacturers, all offering this feature to store something in, maybe some matches or fire starter or a small map maybe -  but consider these two main points -

    1. A hollow handle means a weaker knife as it has not got a full tang
    2. If you loose you knife you loose everything in the handle

Overall, the choice is yours -

But do consider the points above when looking for a good survival knife that suits you.

Generally it is best to have several knives and double up on the most important one.

    Happy Prepping Folks,

    Steve

Survival Knife Guide For Prepping and Survival

Choosing a Survival Knife for Preparedness is very important to ensuring your survival, and no more so than having a knife that suits you and a knife that you feel comfortable with.

Everyone has their own preference for a survival knife, but when the SHTF your going to need a quality knife that will cope with all survival situations.

It's a very personal choice. To be honest, just about any knife is a good knife in a survival situation – but some a far better than others –

As always, it’s better to be fully prepared and have a good knife that you’re familiar with handling and feels just right for you.

Without doubt choosing the best survival knife will come down to how much you really want to spend on one.

  • 1/2 Serrated High Carbon Stainless Steel Drop Point Blade - Ideal for edge retention and cutting rope
  • Ergonomic Textured Rubber Grip - Maximizes comfort and reduces slippage
  • Stainless Steel Pommel - At base of handle for hammering
  • Emergency Whistle - Integrated into lanyard cord
  • Sheath features firestarter and diamond sharpener,Lockable blade.blade length : 4.8 inches.
  • Some knife manufacturers charge upwards of £300 for a hand built knife that is guaranteed to last and be able to withstand all survival situations, but there’s precious few preppers who would spend that kind of money when their £300 could go on several other pieces of essential equipment.

I think you have to be a serious Bushcrafter to consider spending that amount of money on one knife, however you are getting something a bit special and quite unique. They are, after all, a work of art, even the sheaths are superb..!

But, if you are really interested in bushcraft, and all the skills that are associated with it then a hand made, unique knife is often what you would choose - these beautiful knives above are made by master knife-smith, Ben Orford and range from around £250 and upwards past £450

However, from a prepping and survival point of view - any knife is a good knife in a survival situation, but what's the secret of a good survival knife?

As any prepper will tell you - the survival knife is one of the most the essential tools in their survival kit, and as such, must be much more than just a ‘knife to cut things with’.

    • A survival knife must be good enough, strong enough and sharp enough to manage all the basic survival tasks that include hunting, combat, cutting, chopping, bush-craft and much, much more.
    • A good quality survival knife can easily be a life saver that enables you to accomplish all the basic requirements of survival outdoors.
    • Your knife must be capable of enabling you to create a comfortable shelter and to start a fire, to hunt for and prepare your food, it must also be capable of clearing pathways and for digging, as well as giving personal protection if required.
    • Choosing your knife will depend on several factors, some of these are more important than others, so I suggest a quick look at my guide to choosing a survival knife for more information and tips.

There are many choices of survival knives, that offer various qualities.

Currently, with the popularity of the Ray Mears bushcraft series on the TV it’s possible to see how a knife can be used effectively – Ray uses a Mora knife for most bushcraft work

Mora knives are high quality and very competitively priced - here's a full list of their range, via Amazon
    Mora Knives and Cutting Tools

  • Full tang stainless steel knife is most robust Morakniv ever made; two versions available (sold separately): with leather sheath or multi mount system
  • Top grade 14C28N Sandvik stainless steel blade features razor sharpness, high hardness, and exceptional toughness and corrosion resistance
  • Molle compatible mount system securely fastens knife to vehicles, walls, clothing, or Packs so that it's instantly accessible in any situation
  • Square-edged ground spine blade can be used as a striker with fire steel
  • Limited lifetime manufacturer's warranty

  • The Basic Essentials Of A Good Survival Knife

Modern manufacturing methods and technology means that you can have a good quality knife that will do a lot of survival jobs for a relatively low price   – but there’s a few things to consider when buying one –

    • A folding knife is far more liable to break due to the folding action - so avoid them.
    • The knife must fit you size of hand – if the handle is to thick or too thin you will loose grip
    • A fixed blade knife is better for levering and chopping and most other survival skills.
    • Always choose a ‘3/4′ or ‘full tang’ knife’, where the blade runs through into the handle
    • Any knife needs to be 'looked after' and will lose its edge eventually, so be prepared to sharpen or even reset the cutting edge at some point.

Resist the temptation to buy a really large bushcraft / survival / hunting knife.

You may think you look a real cool dude, but, c'mon, is it really necessary?

If you want a big blade then buy an axe or a machete, that will do the job better than some huge Rambo styled knife..

And, never try an 'beef up' you knife. It is what it is - if you want a different knife, then buy another one that suits your needs.

  • High Carbon Steel Blade
  • Stacked Leather Handle
  • Complete with Leather Sheath
  • As a rule, you choose your knife depending on the job you want it to do. For intricate carving and fine work, go with a smaller blade that's easy to manipulate and is light and easy in the hand.

If your intention is to be making survival shelters or more heavier woodwork, then a larger, more solid blade is required with a thicker blade section that will take battoning and a bit of abuse.

Let the job dictate the knife and don't make things difficult for yourself by using the wrong knife for the job.

For more information, I have a previous article that shows all the things you need to know and what to watch out for -   'How To Choose  A Survival Knife',

Choosing your blade shape is also an important factor when selecting the best survival knife.

Below are two typical bushcraft/survival knives, both are full tang and more than capable of doing most tasks.
These are the type of knife, that if used and treated with respect, will last a lifetime.
I would recommend buying these type over a bigger knife as you will find they offer more flexibility and range of tasks that can be performed.

    Survival And Bushcraft Knife Collections

The knives that I have listed above are very good quality and will do the job well, so it just boils down to a matter of personal preference really.

But no prepper relies on just one survival knife…. – I can’t make this point enough, always carry at least two survival knives that suit you and work best for you.
Remember, Two Is One - One is None!

As well as your main survival knife, it's advisable to carry a multi tool as well - they will get you out of a multitude of situations: See: Best Swiss Army Knife Guide

I hope this guide has given you a general idea of what to look out for when buying a new bushcraft or survival knife.

    Happy prepping Folks,
    Steve

    Can You Drink Rain Water?

rain water harvesting methods in the wilderness

Collecting water can be a great way to conserve resources but can you drink rain water?

Collecting rain water at home or in a survival situation may well be your only choice for drinking water.

However, rainwater is not quite as pure and clean as you may might think, so never assume the rain dripping down from your roof is safe to drink.

Even as the rain pours down it has collected many airborne particles and contaminates.

As it runs down and off your roof it has a happy time soaking up anything that just happens to on your roof.

Typically, any form of waste or bird poo will wash down from your roof and then easily be absorbed into any rainwater that passes it.

So if you’re trying to collect it, you can guarantee it’s already contaminated with something that can cause you problems.

Bacteria, viruses, parasites and numerous chemicals can also be carried along in rain water, but can you drink rain water?

Generally speaking you would be ill advised to do so – especially with all the potential nasties that can lead to an upset stomach at least, and severe disease (or even death) at worse.

There are, however, a few things that can make your rain water better or worse, namely your location and how you store that water. Also the temperature the water is stored at.

Whatever collection method you use the water will not be anywhere near clean enough or safe enough to drink – in a nutshell, stored water from collected rain water should only ever be used for watering plants or washing your car..!

From a preppers perspective and a survival situation you would most likely be collecting rain water for drinking and cooking purposes only. So for the purpose of cooking you will be boiling the water, making it safe to cook with.

    germs in water glass

Bacteria & Viruses can hide in rain water

Any Collected Rain Water For Drinking Must Be Made Safe To Drink

Adding water purification tablets will work to a certain degree and give you drinkable rain water.

    water tablets

But you can only carry so many which severally restricts longer term drinking water in a bug out or survival situation.
Plus they are not an ‘instant’ answer to obtaining safe drinkable water.

Fortunately, water purification tablets are very cheap to buy, as well as being compact and lightweight.
Making them an ideal weapon against contaminated water.

One tablet per litre of water, shake and wait half hour, and your good to go.
If you can boil the water to a rolling boil as well, then that's double bubble and your about as safe as you can be.

The main drawback of tablets is you need a store of water and it's time consuming, especially compared to the next method below....

There Is An Answer To 'Can You Drink Rain Water'..

A portable water filter bottle will give you gallons of safe drinking water every time you need it, wherever you need it – this means you can collect rain water however you want and use a portable water filter bottle to ensure you are drinking clean, safe water without any parasites, viruses and bacteria.

A portable water filter bottle can also be used to give you safe drinking water from any water source – river, pond, puddle – anything except salt sea water in fact.

There is no boiling and no tablets involved, just fill, filter and drink. This is a preppers dream.

Personally and from my own survival experiences I use the 'Water To Go' filter bottle when I am out and about.
But for larger quantities of drinking water I use the  LifeSaver Water Filter Bottle’.
They both work perfect every time, regardless of the water quality I put through it.

See my full video review of the Water To Go Bottle filter system here.
And get 15% special discount on all bottle and filters.

So the answer to the question of  ‘can you drink rain water’ is generally a big no, but, with the right equipment you definitely can drink rain water, pond water, river water.

You just need to run it through a good water filter first.

    Happy Prepping Folks,  Steve

Best Air Rifle For Hunting And Survival In The UK

    man with air gun

Air rifle hunting is carried out by many people and there are many different air powered rifles available in the UK.
However, there are two distinct differences to consider when choosing the best air rifle.

The two distinct differences are a matter of the law. To own a air rifle that is more powerful than 12 ft lb you must have a FAC - Fire Arms Certificate.

However, anyone over 18 can purchase and own an air rifle below 12 ft lb rating.

Unless you are a competition shooter and take the sport very seriously, I would not even consider going to the trouble of trying to get yourself a FAC especially as many of the Non FAC rifles are more than capable of doing the job very nicely.

Having said that, you have a perfect right, by law, to own many different firearms in the UK – in fact, the different types of legal firearm would probably surprise you!

If you are of good standing and can prove so, you simply have to pass the required police checks and your ok to purchase and use a firearm

    see my FireArms guide here:

Considerations For Choosing The Best Air Rifle For Hunting And Survival In The UK

    • Your rifle must be capable of hunting small game - in survival, this is its primary purpose.
    • Choose a .22 rifle for a clean kill - generally a .177 is preferred for target shooting, but will still take down a rabbit at the right range with an accurate head shot.
    • It needs to be light - you may well need to take it with you in your Bug Out Bag, so weight is important.
    • It needs to be compact - choose a smaller weapon over a longer barreled, bulky rifle.
    • Reputable, tried and tested manufacturer - a good second hand British or German rifle will still perform well enough to hunt with.
    • For pure value for money, consider buying a Chinese brand. (can be risky at times though)
    • It needs to look menacing..! more for personal protection, should you need it. Tactical rifles always look mean.
    • Cost could also be a factor for some - look to pay upto £300 for a mint secondhand rifle

    Always remember -

    • In a SHTF situation any rifle is a good rifle..! So long as it works you're still in with a chance....

    TYpes Of Air Rifle

There are 2 main types of air gun – spring or gas ram and PCP [ Pre Charged Pneumatic]:

    • Spring - Piston
The cocking action puts tension on a spring which becomes the main mechanism to propel the pellet.
    • Gas Ram
Essentially the same, except the tension is used to pressurize a gas ram and not a spring.
    • Pneumatic
A cylinder mounted within the rifle body is pre-charged with air, with a small amount of pressure  reducing each time your fire.

    Spring Piston or Gas Ram
fixed barrel - underarm cocking - these type of
air rifle as known as 'springer rifles'.

    Spring Piston or Gas Ram
again, a springer rifle, but with the barrel
being used to compress the mainspring.

    Spring or Gas Ram Rifle:

This shows the loading point of a .22 or .177 pellet.

One shot at a time - unlike a PCP rifle which can have a multi shot magazine.

A PCP rifle with multi shot magazine like this BSA Ultra is leaps ahead of the old springers.
The cylinder is below the fixed barrel  and once fully charged will give 70 - 100 shots before needing to be refilled.

    Pre-Charged Pneumatic [PCP]

The extremely good BSA Scorpion - an excellent 'value for money' rifle and certainly one of the top contenders for Best Air Rifle For Hunting
70-100 shots on one charge / gas cylinder is charged up to 200 - 232 bar.

There's two methods available to charge the gas cylinder on a PCP:

    air rifle pump image
    air bottle with guage

Most rifles are available in different livery as well - this PCP rifle offers a solid wallet body, for the traditional look. A  black Polyester Resin Stock for a tactical look, and a Full Camo Print design for the hunter.

The Big Question Is - Which Is The Best Type Of Air Rifle To Choose.?

Do you go for the spring piston, the gas ram or the PCP – there are plusses and minuses for each type.
All are very capable to use as a survival rifle and more than capable of hunting small game like rabbits and pigeons.
In fact you only need around 6 ft lb to kill a rabbit and less for a pigeon with a head shot.

For a rabbit or pigeon kill shot, you're looking at a  maximum hunting distance of 30 mtrs for the .22 – the .177 may give you a bit more at 40 mtrs.

I have heard stories of people saying they killed rabbits at over 60 mtrs, but that's rare and highly unlikely, and more like ‘old hunting tales’….

But remember, the PCP and the Springer are both very capable hunting weapons,
when used in the right hands.

Springer or PCP? Both are capable rifles to use for hunting small game and survival.
I personally have two springers and a PCP, and by far prefer my PCP over the other two.
The performance, for me, is much better.
But.... the PCP has far more working parts that could fail in a SHTF situation.
So the answer, as always, is to try and cover all the options.

With a PCP rifle like this BSA R10 [shown here in camo livery], you're looking at 70+ shots before a recharge, a 10 shot magazine, it's very quiet, virtually no recoil and deadly accurate.

Weighs just over 7lbs and you can get it on a choice of .22 or .177

What more can I say...! A beast of a rifle for silent, deadly hunting of small game..

Of course there's always a downside to most things.

The main one here is that a PCP rifle should really be serviced regularly and, ideally from the gun shop where you bought it.

Most good gun shops will offer this service, with some it's free if you buy certain rifles from them.

I use a BSA Scorpion T10 and here's an example of the main parts that make up the rifle >

    Ask Your
    Gunsmith...
    the-airgun-centre-shop-banner-3

Any gunsmith will give you advice about all aspects of buying and using an air rifle - don't be intimidated by going into a gun shop purely by your lack of knowledge.

They are a very friendly bunch, and always very knowledgeable and eager to help with advice. Remember, airguns are their passion too and they are more than capable of giving you expert advice - far more than I could ever give here.

I highly recommend a trip to your local gun shop before making an decisions on what is the right rifle for your own needs.

I am very fortunate to have one of the very best air rifle suppliers in the country at under 10 miles away from me, The AirGun Centre, based in Rayleigh, Essex, (they also have a superb on-line shop as well). The AirGun Centre, who are based in Rayleigh, Essex. (they do have a very good on-line shop as well) a

Of course the next step, once you have got your new rifle is to go out and practice.

I would highly recommend finding a local air gun shooting range to get to know your new rifle – there are lots of them about and there’s bound to be one fairly close to you.

The advantages of the range are it's far more 'real' than your back garden and there are some fantastic range setups around the UK.

Make sure you are within the UK laws
    *also see Air Gun laws

An air rifle is considered an offensive weapon in the eyes of the law and exactly where you are allowed to carry it and use it needs to be strictly observed.

Do not, under any circumstances, have an air rifle or air pistol in a public place and certainly do not have it out of its case and on full view.

Unlike our American friends, who have completely different gun laws to us here in the UK, and are allowed to freely carry a rifle for hunting or even a pistol as concealed carry.

In the UK – just don’t even think about risking it.

    Final Thoughts

As preppers and especially as we are talking a SHTF situation, one of the main concerns is going to be reliability of your rifle.

That being said, there really is only one type of rifle that you should consider as the Best Air Rifle For Hunting And Survival:
and that is a bog standard Spring Piston air rifle.

The two main reasons are simple:
1/ fewer parts to go wrong.
2/ doesn't need to be charged up

With so few moving parts the spring piston has to be top of the list.

Don't get me wrong, I love my PCP, but think purely doomsday survival, food procurement and reliability and the Spinger is your best choice.
Not only for the reason above, but for example:
A brand spanking new Weinrauch HK is going to set you back less than £400.

    judge with gavel image

the ultra reliable AND very accurate HW80 from the German manufacturers Weihrauch

If you prefer to by British, then BSA is a good choice of established quality brands - the BSA Lightening is a well loved hunting rifle and you can get a brand new one for £350, so great value for money.

The simplicity of the spring piston rifle has a lot more to offer when faced with SHTF - as you can see in this exploded view, the minimum of moving parts to go wrong.
You will still achieve a pellet velocity of over 550 feet per second with a legal 12ft/lb rifle using a .22 pellet, and even more with a .177.
This is ample to give a kill shot for most small game at anything up to 50 yards.

Hopefully this article has helped you out a bit. It's a big subject and quite a specialist one when you really get into it.

My definite advice, before buying, is to visit your local gun shop
You will get great help from knowledgeable people.

    Happy Prepping Folks.

What Are The Requirements Of A Good Filter Water Bottle

filter water bottle by a lake

With so many products in the marketplace it makes choosing the right filter water bottle that will give you clean, safe drinking water is a bit of a minefield!
So what can be done to ensure you choose the right one for you needs?

Firstly I'm not talking a common or garden sports drinking bottle. Or the sort of bottle that sits in your fridge and you just fill up from the tap, that's the type with some cheapo charcoal filter inside.
I'm writing this article specifically about portable water bottles that will save your life in emergencies and a survival situation.

    filter water bottle by lake

Use my discount code UKprep15 at checkout for an extra 15% off every Water To Go product.

The amount of filters out there that are correctly tested and certify safe drinking water are very few. Most just take the bad smell and taste out of the water, nothing more.

Obviously if you are buying a filter water bottle, as a prepper it must meet certain requirements.
Firstly and most importantly, you want safe, clean drinking water, free from as many nasties as possible and to be able to get it from as many sources as possible.
With regards to what types fo contaminates it will remove, always check the manufacturers filter specifications and results first.

You must be able to store a reasonable amount in the bottle. Not too much, as the weight could be a problem and slow you down, so I think the 75cl bottle gives you a happy medium here.
I think the bottle must be see through, you know exactly how much you have got and if you need to be on the lookout for a top up.
If you can use it to fill other container, then that's a big plus as well.

    filter water bottle on rucksack

    Water-To-Go 'ACTIVE' out hiking...

I have used the Water To Go bottle for over six years and consider it to be one of the very best on the market today.

Having reviewed and tested (see video review here) the very first designs, I've watched as they are constantly improving the design and usability.

Without a doubt the Water To Go bottle is my 'go to' piece of kit when I need a means of filtering dirty, contaminated water. Whether it's from for a puddle, river, lake or stream.

In fact I can get safe, clean drinking water from just about any source excluding sea water.

    The Latest Water Filter Bottle
    From Water-To-Go

Below is the Active 75cl Filter Water Bottle.  These are the general features of the filter bottle.

    • Squeezable bottle for rapid water delivery
    • New single-handed action click lid
    • Lid covers drinking spout for hygiene
    • Weighs just 137 grams
    • Translucent with content markings so you know when to refill
    • Durable BPA free bottle
    • FDA Approved
    • Fits any bike cage and includes a detachable carabiner hook

The main filter life is based on usage, not time.
So the 'Active Filter Bottle" has a 200-litre filter capacity that will last for 100 days.

This is based on you consuming 2 litres of water per day.  Or even longer, for 200 days at 1litre per day and so on.

From a money saving point of view, I also use mine indoors.
Commercial bottled water works out far to dear!
One filter cartridge will give you 200 litres of clean, safe drinking water.
A set of two filters cost £19.99 now take off my UKprep15 discount code of 15% and add delivery £3.98 (free delivery on  orders over £20) so that's a total of £20.97.

Work that out and the cost is only 5p per litre...!

I think it's worth having for that saving by itself let alone the fact that that your getting safe, clean, properly filtered water.

How Does It Make Water Safe To Drink?

Inside the BPA-free Water-to-Go 75cl Active bottle you'll see the 3-in-1 filter and below is the click action lid. The lid has an integral drinking spout and protective, flip cap cover.
I found that this lid and spout mechanism design works well, especially when wearing glove.

The filter will work straight away to protect against bacteria, parasites and microplastics. It also reduces chemicals like chlorine and therefor gives a much improved water taste.

These are the three technologies used in a Water-to-Go filter:

    1. Mechanical filtration; a very small pore size which stops contaminants passing through.
    2. Electrical (by a positive charge) which reduces the pore size even further and attracts contaminants like a magnet, trapping them inside the filter.
    3. Activated carbon - the filter use activated carbon without using adhesives that would vastly reduce the carbon’s efficiency. Instead the activated carbon is contained within the filter membrane itself. This technique helps further reduce the contaminants whilst also eliminating bad tastes and odours.

This make this type of water filter perfect for preppers, disasters and emergencies, as well as general hiking, camping and all types of international travel in countries where the water quality is suspect!

How To Choose The Best Hunting Catapults For Survival

One of the oldest tools used for procuring food are hunting catapults and a very good bit of survival kit to have in your bug out bag.
But what is the best catapult to hunt with? What is the best value for money and will greatly help you get through SHTF?

Catapults can be made from very basic materials and with practice can be very effective - Today's Catapults are considered a much more lethal and accurate weapon than ever before.

Made from high-tec materials and design giving you a serious weapon.
In a survival situation they would become an essential food hunting tool.

Firstly, let's look at the pros and cons of adding a catapult to your survival kit.

Along with your survival knife and a multi tool knife, a catapult is quite low-tec in it's principle design and operation, relying more on your own skill than the actual catapult itself.

See full range of catapults here:
    Hunting Catapults

Essentials to consider when choosing the best catapult to hunt with

    Pros of The Catapult Design:

    • Accurate and deadly
    • Very quiet operation
    • Easy to load and reload
    • Fast reload [with practice]
    • Simple operation
    • Compact
    • Light weight
    • Main working parts are easily changes or repaired
    • Low initial cost
    • Unlimited supply of ammunition if needed [ eg – stones]

    High Tec Catapults

Above is a high powered 'compound' weapon designed to fire both ball bearings and arrows.
This is high tec catapult also has the option of adding a laser sight...!

You can screw the arrow rest attachment to the front of the catapult to allow the arrow to go through.

With the added wrist support you can maintain a steady aim and have a comfortable firing position as well.

    Cons of The Catapult Design:

    • Practice required to build up accuracy
    • Ammunition can be bulky and weighty [ 200x 8mm ball bearings would weigh about 1.5lb ]
    • A supply of replacement catapult bands is required

Highly Polished 6mm Steel Shot is also readily available.
This tin of 250 sells for £5.15

Essentially the catapult has only three components, making it ideal as a low maintenance and easily repairable bit of kit.
The frame, firing bands and pouch - it is also very easy to make your own for forage materials: wooden frame from a tree branch, leather pouch from an old shoe and firing bands for strips of an old cycle inner tube tyre.

Choosing The best catapult to hunt with

Anybody who has used a catapult before will tell you how invaluable it can be in survival situations.
Like any good hunting weapons, not every catapult is made equal. There are a few different features that you should think about which will enable you to choose the right catapult for you

    1. Frame Material

There are three main frame materials, namely: plastic, wood and metal. Having different materials to choose from will offer you equally different advantages and disadvantages.
If you know the differences around what each one can offer, there's a much better chance you choosing the best hunting catapult for you.

    • Plastic:

    – Most economical to manufacture and this reflects in the cost.
    – Various plastic sub-types available. Offering different advantages in grip and feel as well.
    – Glass-filled nylon also offers excellent frame material if you’re looking for a lighter catapult.

    • Wood:

    – Wooden catapults are the oldest types there is.
    – Generally mimicking the 'Y' of a tree branch, but can be formed into many different shapes through laser cutting or hand shaping
-- They tend to offer a good 'feel', and you can make them yourself relatively easily.

    • Metal:

    – These catapults can offer a light and strong body.
    – However, they are generally the most expensive of the three.
-- They are the most robust and longest-lasting frame material you can get.
    – Choosing steel or aluminium frame catapults that have an ergonomic handle with added foam, rubber or cord wrapping also offers comfort to the mix.

    2. FIRING BAND TYPES:

There are essentially two main band types in use within the market today- the flat rubber type and the tubular band type.
Each band type has a more specific use and will depend on what you intend to use the catapult for.
The rubber tubing type is better known for being durable, as opposed to a catapult with the flat rubber bands generally provide a a more accurate shot and are better in hunting scenarios.

    • Flat Bands

    – Catapults fitted with the flat bands tend to have a more faster shot and are more accurate, this is due to their rapid “snapback speed” feature ( *The rate at which your projectile moves forward ).
    – Flat bands produce a higher 'feet per second' projectile speed with the added advantage of being easier to draw. If you’re firing for accuracy such as hunting, then flat bands are the best choice.

    • Rubber Tubing

    – Rubber tube band will outlast flat bans. It’s the best set to choose when surviving for longer periods of time.
    – Rubber tube bands can offer you a specific draw weight. Choose the type that feels right for your draw strength and the best shooting action/feel.

    * The best things is: Firing bands are relatively cheap and easy to get a hold of. Therefore you should test each one out and see which suit you the best.

    See a selection of firing bands here;

    3: AMMUNITION POUCH:

This may seam like a unnecessary consideration, but the ammo pouch can play it's part in a good catapult. Especially for it's comfort and grip.
Always get a catapult with the pouch made from leather, it will naturally mould to the type and size of the ammo that you use.
Being leather, it's natural properties allow it to remain supple at all times, giving you a feel for the ammo at all times.

    4: Other Considerations:

There are many different types o catapults to choose from. Many them come with added features to entice to buyer.
Some of these features can actually add benefits to the product which make it a good purchase.

    a) Grip Type:

It is essential that your catapult feels comfortable and has a good grip.
A catapult that provides a good grip do a lot more than just stopping blisters. - It will allow you to practice for longer without hand or wrist fatigue, and give you more shots with better accuracy.
Ergonomic or contoured slingshot handles will fit perfectly in your hand, like this CyberDyer Professional shown below:

    b) Target Sighting

Having a sight and a point of reference will greatly improves your accuracy of shot.
It's a great addition to a hunting catapult as it will give you a feel for distance and shooting accuracy.

Sights are key to hunting accuracy and will give you a accuracy advantage especially with smaller game.
A lot of the top catapults will be fitted with an adjustable sighting systems attached, like this Obert Outdoor Catapult shown below:

    c) Hollow Handle

A catapult with a hollow handle is worth considering, they are lighter but, being hollow, a lot less stronger.
However, they offer a space to store spare ammo and other survival gear like spare bands, a fire starter, matches, compass and son on.are great for storing additional ammunition or spare bands. These usually come with a screw-on cap at the base of the handle for access.

    • Going High Tec:

So a hunting catapult can be as low-tec as you want. Of course there are others, much more specific, high-tec catapults available like this calibrated hunting catapult shown here: ( *sells for £35.00)

    Wrist Support:

Choosing a hunting catapult with a wrist support can help reduce fatigue and muscle stress, especially when practising and taking lots of shots.
But the main purpose of a wrist support is stability. It will aid you to keep the wrist locked in place in order to line a shot more accurately.
Personally, I don't use them, but if you have weaker wrists or for use with a child they are very good.

Overall the pros far outweighs the cons making this type of weapon ideal for hunting and preppers.

Remember you will also need a good supply of ammo [ball bearings seem to work best] and also some replacement bands - [the elastic rubber with replacement pouch.]

That said, there are some excellent hunting catapults around today that work really well and all hover around the same price bracket of between £25 - £100 - Replacement bands will cost anything upto £5 to renew and ball bearing ammo [8mm] is around £5 for 200.
