Hurricane Lantern
Old School Preppers Light
You only have to go back to the 1950s to know that just about every household had a Hurricane Lantern hanging in their home.
Before the high production of small, lightweight batteries, and definitely before anyone had even considered solar power, you had the very trusty Hurricane Lantern.
In fact, they have been about since 1780, when their inventor, Francois-Pierre Aime Argand, the son of a Swiss watchmaker, came up with the original idea.
As prepping equipment, the 'Old School' style of Hurricane Lantern is definitely worth considering as another alternative method of lighting for both inside and outside.
Why choose on old school lantern?
There's a few very good points that make this type of lantern well worth considering as an addition to your home or bug out preps.
They can throw out an amazing amount of light or be damped down to give a nice low light glow by simply adjusting the wick length, and will not be effected by the wind if your using one outside.
The built quality is very high - being German made, the engineering will always be top notch.
They will burn Kerosene, Paraffin or Lamp Oil - although lamp oil is by far the best, giving off no smell or unpleasant odors.
If you use outdoors, you can also burn Citronella lamp oil which will act as an insect replant as well.
Without a doubt, one of the best Hurricane Lanterns is the Feuerhand Storm Lantern.
This lantern has been manufactured since the 1930s and was based on a simular American design from even further back in the 1860s.
Now made and assembled exclusively in Germany it's one of the worlds top ranked old school lanterns
I own one of these and the only bad thing I can say about them is that their a little on the bulky side and are difficult to pack in a rucksack.
But hanging on a tree branch, at night in camp, they give of a really nice light. Almost like being in an old frontier town.!
Traditionally these were called either Hurricane or Storm Lanterns simply because they could withstand the wind and rain of a fierce weather storm in the wilds.
Nowadays I think their worth considering for prepping, especially home prepping.
The tank holds 1/3 litre of fuel and will burn for up to 20 hours.
In a SHTF situation you would expect to need light for the minimum amount each day, and on average 5 hours - so one full lamp will give you 4 nights light.
If your using clean grade lamp oil, then a litre bottle will give you 12 nights light for a cost of around 75p per night..!
If your not too worried about the smell then using paraffin will significantly reduce this amount to under 23p per night.! (4tr bottle)
All in all, a good old fashioned, reliable Hurricane Lantern, of the old school preppers light style that fits right in with the prepping ethos of keeping things simple and having a back of equipment that's reliable and requires very few working parts that could go wrong.
Add that to the choice of fuels that can be used, it's a very versatile means of lighting.
This is an video of an old Feuerhand lantern still going strong.
The design has hardly changed after all those years.
This is a very good unboxing video of the Feuerhand lantern.
Showing the lantern in detail
Lantern is currently under £18
I have had this exact lantern for over ten years now and it has been superb - never let me down.
Although I have never taken it with me hiking or on a weekend camp, it fits in very nicely with my 'back up' preps and is often used in the garden.
A good buy, without a doubt.
Happy Prepping Folks.
